I'm posting an email I got from Iams this morning. This is in response to emails I sent back and forth a few months ago (I'm sure they are sending this to everyone who contacted them regarding their research practices - though wouldn't it have been special if they sent it especially to me.... ):

Dear Caring Consumer:

We are sending you this message because you have contacted us in the past in

regards to our Research Policy.

We are pleased to announce that we have established an International Animal Care

Advisory Board to evaluate our industry-leading research policy and advise us on

new research alternatives that provide for advanced levels of dog and cat care.

The Iams International Animal Care Advisory Board, an independent group,

currently consists of seven members, representing various disciplines and fields

of study, including veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, behavior, welfare,

and ethics. They are:

Mr. Michael Arms of the Helen Woodward Animal Center (a leading California-based

shelter and adoption facility).

Dr. Kathryn Bayne of the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of

Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).

Rev. Kenneth Boyd, a professor of Medical Ethics at Edinburgh University Medical

School, and a research director of the Institute of Medical Ethics, Edinburgh,

Scotland.

Dr. Stephen Hansen of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to

Animals (ASPCA).

Dr. Robert Hubrecht of The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW).

Dr. Irene Rochlitz, an independent veterinary consultant in feline welfare,

Cambridge, England.

Dr. Andrew Rowan of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

The Advisory Board's first task will be to conduct a comprehensive review of The

Iams Company research policy and steps taken to implement that policy since it

was last updated in June 2002. The Board will also establish a series of next

steps and recommendations. In addition to work with our Board members, we are

actively seeking the perspective of other animal welfare consultants.

The formation of this board was a top priority for us and a major step in our

continued efforts to enhance the health and well-being of dogs and cats around

the world. While we already have an industry-leading policy on nutritional

studies - which requires that our research be equivalent to nutritional and

medical studies acceptable on people - we believe even more can be done.

Thank you for the care and concern you've shown for dogs and cats. And thank you

for your interest in our company.

Doesn't it always seem like the replies from these companies leave much to desire, and are way too vague through the entire thing. I wish they would just stop fooling themselves and tell the truth about what they have done in the past and what they are going to do about it. It makes me sick to think that the world is so cruel, and even sicker to see companies hiding and lieing to the public.

Bleurgh. How can they even begin to say that?? The websites I've seen (with video evidence, and photos, and documents) show exactly what liars they are. Grrr

Write that letter! Does it say that it's tested on animals on the packet? If not then you can mention false advertising or lack of imformation.

I write a lot of letters to people! My most recent one was to a famous journalist (he replied, too!)

as in most atrocities, what is uncovered is usually just

the tip of the iceberg.

do not be fooled, people who are capable of these things should not be trusted again, if they could do it once, they will do it again if profitable.

people capable of killing and torturing cows and chicken, are capable of doing the same to dogs, deceiving humans, and worse.

would they avoid breeding dogs/cats to fill animal-shelters in order to increase profits? but really, will they?
