We all made the statement as a kid: When I grow up, I'm not going to do .... or say.... like my mom or dad does.

Here we are adults living our lives on our own .... and son of a*

drat I'm doing just the things I couldn't stand to see in my mother and swore I wouldn't do.

Name the habits your parent or guardian had that are somehow unconsciously ingrained into your being and you can't stop yourself from doing.

I'll start:

When my mom used to make pasta, she would dump the sauce into a small pot on the stove to heat it. Once the jar was empty or close to being empty .... she would fill it 1/4 of the way with tap water, put the lid back on, shake it to get all of the remaining sauce and then add this mixture to the sauce that is already in the pot.

I used to hate this, because it would make the sauce runny and watered-down. Well for the life of me, I can't break myself from doing it. It drives me nuts. I catch myself, laugh and continue to do it.

I believe there are special "spatulas" of sorts nowadays to get the remnants of your sauce, vegenaise, etc.. out of a jar. I really should buy one and see how sauce it supposed to taste.

I know I have more than this story to share, but I want to hear some of your tales too.

I'm convinced I'm turning into my mother She's always been nosey, and whenever a car drove past or she heard someone she'll stick her nose through the blinds to see...and it used to really embarrass me, but I realised I've begun doing it too. And I moan about my little sister being too "energetic" while me and mum are trying to have an afternoon rest Loads more things, but I have a neighbour to go nose at.

My mother is a clean freak. I'm turning into one.

I'm not as bad as she is, yet. For example, I can leave the house with a few dirty dishes sitting in the sink. But when I get home, I feel guilty if I don't do them as soon as I have a free moment. I also swore that I wasn't going to be as bossy and stubborn as she is, but I seem to have both of those traits, too.

I told a co-worker who wasn't feeling well to go home, take a hot shower and drink some juice. That is my mom's standard remedy for everything so when that phrase popped out of my mouth, I almost laughed. I also lectured this same co-worker about the importance of taking recommended dosage of medication (not more to increase its potency) and this is one of my mom's pet peeves.

I hear it in my voice. She has certain ways of speaking that grate on me after years of hearing them, and more and more often lately I hear the same damn thing coming out of my mouth.

My mother has always had this habit of moving beverages and dishes of food away from the edge of the table so they wouldn't get knocked off. I've become obsessive about it. I'll move that stuff around the table if it gets anywhere near my elbows, even to the point of moving my dad's glass of water or whatever from one side of his plate to the other, which annoys him.

I told myself over and over I wouldn't be exactly like my mom. She's a teacher. I thought I was on the right track when I started homeschooling... but somehow I got a job at a daycare program in a school, and I love it so much that I'm thinking about being a classroom associate.

As I type this, she's puttering around, nagging at me. I swear I'll never do that. It makes me want to pull my ears off.

I have another weird one. My mom chews her tongue. I don't know if it's because she is bored, nervous, or trying to avoid having a cigarette. It is not very becoming and is a little embarrassing.

I've caught myself doing this ... thankfully never in public.

Why do we repeat these habits? vicious cycle.

EXACTLY! I catch myself doing that. I'll say something and think "Oh my god. I sound just like my mom." My handwriting is a lot like hers, too.

I promised myself I wouldn't grow up to transcend the need for corporeal form and turn into pure energy.

And yet here I am.

Sigh.

Cheers!

I tell the same stories over and over. Just like my mom does. Except my stories are about my experiences, not hers, so therefore everyone else must find them as interesting as I do.

Give me a few more years. I'm sure I'll morph into my parents in unsightly ways yet.

No signs yet of me turning into my mother, in fact we are complete opposites. I don't drink a liter of Jack a day and never will, so there is probably not much chance I'll turn into the other person half responsible for my birth either.
