I was walking down a main road and further ahead a girl was crossing the road, with a Dog following her.

As it got halfway across a car hit it, on the side of the head. The Dog jumped back, ran to the side of the road it came from, then darted across again..... and almost got run over by a truck.

It all happened really quickly, but as I watched it I feared the worse (so of course this got me quite upset). Then the Dog came running up the footpath in my direction, with the girl calling to it.

It got to me then waited for her. As she got to it I was asking if it was okay, and she checked and said it seemed to be (lucky it was dark or she'd have seen my tears).

She then thanked me for my concern and we parted (I was still a little shaken).

I don't know if the driver was aware of hitting it, although further down the road a car had pulled over and had its engine running. But I can't be sure if that was the car.

Edited: A few typos.

I recently saw a dog get hit on a busy road, too. About four cars immediately pulled over to go help the limping lab. It's a horrible thing to have to see. Keep your animals away from the roads, people!

I would almost throw up if I saw something like that. I can just imagine how upset you were! When I was in Utah, we saw a coyote get hit by an oncoming car and I couldn't stop crying. It really put us in a dark mood for a while. Poor coyote.

I'm glad to hear the dog was okay, though. What a trooper!

I drive on a major highway that is very close to residential neighborhoods, so I see dead animals all the time. I cry everytime. I see dogs on the side of the road occationally, and a lot of cats. It really upsets me. I have never seen one killed in front of my eyes, luckily, but I did drive past about 2 min after two beautiful dogs were hit. I won't describe what I saw, but I will say I cried for about half an hour after that. I'm not sure how I saw to drive home I was crying so much. I'm sorry you had to see that Kurm. I would have been crying too. Good thing the dog was ok.

Several years ago, I had stopped at a McDonalds for breakfast. At the drive-thru window, me and the girl at the window saw a whitish dog wandering around the parking lot. I said, "I hope he stays away from the road", which was a busy four-lane. (Here's where the dramatic music would be heard if this were a movie.) I'm at the exit waiting to pull out when I see the dog dart across the road. On the other side, a light blue older model Monte Carlo hit him. Hard. The impact was a dull thud. He spun in the road, obviously dead on impact. I had a front row seat for this, so to speak. I'm tearing up now just thinking about it, and it was at least 8 years ago (god what is wrong with me?). As you can tell, every detail is burned into my mind, probably forever. I screamed hysterically when I saw it, and was not able to drive for a few minutes. When I got to work a couple miles away, I had to sit in my car a while to compose myself. I avoided speaking to anyone fearing I'd break down.

For several months later, that scene replayed itself over and over in my mind, and in my dreams. I still nearly have an anxiety attack when I see an animal near a road, or even in a parking lot. It's slowly turned from anxiety to mostly anger at the owner. I know animals get loose, but I also know there's a lot of neglectful owners, too.

Last year when our dog, Thor, died unexpectedly, these memories came back freshly in my mind. I couldn't watch The Pet Psychic, and especially Emergency Vets on Animal Planet for a while. Geez, perhaps this should go in my blog. I ramble too much. I can certainly commiserate, Kurmudgeon.

I saw a dead bird by the side of the road years ago with another of its kind hanging around; it kept jumping up into the air making little swoops at the dead one, as though it was trying to rouse it.

The next day it was just the dead one there. I wrote a poem about it, too.

I'm so glad the dog appeared to be okay, Kurm. I hope the girl had him/her checked out and will be more responsible in the future. I saw a puppy get hit once on a really busy, multi-lane highway. He looked so scared as he was trying to cross. I cried and cried and cried.

My ex saw a mother skunk dead on the road while riding his bike one day and then heard some funny noises. Upon closer inspection, he say two babies trying to nurse off her.

I myself was in a shocklike state after seeing a chipmunk get run over by a car in front of me one day. I cried later over it.

Now I just want to cry, hearing all this stories, and remembering mine.

in my neighborhood we used to have 3 white ducks (of the AFLAC variety) who were abandoned at the lake when the kids got sick of them. they were given as ducklings for easter presents but were quickly disposed of at the lake. they can't fly and had to rely on me n my family to feed them through their first winter. we named them all Aflac, Sue, and Simon. Simon had a limp and was always slow, but the other two would wait for him. One day Simon was hit by a car when he was too slow crossing the road that runs right by the lake. Aflac and Sue sat beside him the whole day, until someone came to remove Simon's body so that the other two wouldn't get hit as well. I make it sound so sappy but these ducks were like people to me. I cried the whole day Simon died and everyone at school thought asomething was seriously wrong but i didnt want to tell them or they'd laugh at me for crying over a duck. It must be horrible to have seen a dog get hit.

I remember getting very angry with my parents about a month after I had moved out of the house. I used to walk our dog every night for years, without any incident involving a vehicle. Within a month of my parents taking over dog walking duties, the dog was hit by a car (not fatally, thank goodness). That upset me enough, but when I came up for a visit a little while later and decided to take the dog for a walk, they had the nerve to lecture me about the way I was doing it.

i get teary-eyed when i see a dead squirrel, bird or frog on the road. i've seen cats a couple times. last time i got such a good look i almost threw up, good thing i didn't since i was in a car.

anyway i saw a cat get killed in March, what an awful thing to see, i don't blame you for being upset.

i doubt the dog is fine though. he likely has internal injuries, i hope the girl will take him to a vet.

I almost always cause an accident when I see an animal near the road. I usually try to pull over towards deer to scare them away from the road. If its a dog or a cat, I get out and try to track it down and usually end up spending the day or two finding its home.
