I read somewhere that the average number of lives saved by a vegetarian in one year is 83.

*inserts drum roll*

Tomorrow is my one year anniversary! I've not regretted the decision for a minute. I've affected a few folks by leading by example. My boyfriend is more picky about the stuff he eats. He actually doesn't eat chicken anymore; it's a start. His daughter is going to be vegetarian when she's 16 (that's when her mom will allow it). My mom opts for meatless entrees whenever we eat out and people at work are more aware.

So, I feel pretty good to have made a difference!

I'm in the process of setting some goals now to take it a step further for the next year. I want to actually become active somehow in saving lives rather than passively saving them by simply choosing not to eat them.

Cheers

Awesome! That means I've saved about 120... cool
Imagine how many it'd be if we added up everybody on the board! I know we've had some long-time veg*ns here.

Wow.. I dont really see how it could be so many..

Yeah actually I dont believe it (im skeptical of most things..)

But still if I saved one animal a year I'd be happy

Well when you consider a person can eat a fish or 1/2 a chicken per day that adds up quick. Then maybe they throw in things like shrimp. Don't know how they came up with that number. I don't think it's too far-fetched though.

Hrm yeah.. Thats what gets me about the whole fish/chicken eating vegetarians..

I think fish/chicken is the worst to eat, as you are eating a whole life in one sitting.. That's just not right!

"In one lifetime, the average person eats: 11 cows 1 calf 2 sheep 31 pigs 92 turkeys 2,287 chickens and over 1,000 fish Altogether 3,424 animals." I got that off some website.. So if you divide that by 80 (the average life.. well I think it is anyway..) you get 42.. I think thats more realistic...

I think it is not so much as what we do not eat, but that we all prove that a better life exists. There is also profit loss and supply and demand to think of.

I just thing it goes beyond 'You saved this many animals in you life. better luck next time.'

Apparently a typical omni eats 5 cows, 20 pigs, 29 sheep, 760 chickens, 46 turkeys, 15 ducks, 7 rabbits and half a ton of fish in their lifetime.

I also read that 2 and a half million animals are slaughtered every day
