so my goal is to go vegan by august 1st, my 17th bday.. ive already been vegetarian for 4 years and im ready to step it up a notch. my sister is also a vegan and shes been don it for wat seems to be about 6 years now.

ive already gotten rid of all my leather. and ive been wearing sandles for the past month now cause i cant find shoes.

i really like athletic shoes, but its hard find them without leather or suede. i really liked these Puma Romas that were vegan, they were called "wooly" or something. and i really like them, but i cant find them anywhere. they are the shoes my sister has and im hoping that they make them for guys.

please oh please, point me to every possible source, even direct brands and the shoe style. i really need some shoes. what kinda shoes do you guys wear?

thanks

I live in sandals most of the time (that was all I wore until I found these shoes)

Yeah, there are converse all-stars (they're canvas) that are vegan.

I have a pair of volatiles that happened to be vegan. I was wandering through a really obscure store and I happened to come across them. I am not sure if volatile has many vegan products, but they MIGHT be worth a shot.

Go to the sites Caroline mentioned, I'm thinking that your best bet would be online.

BTW- we have the same bday! Just thought I'd mention that. heh.

MY SHOES are the new balance 602 and the heel part has been eaten off. but thats becuase i dont tie/untie my laces. but you would think they could last a little longer then 3.5 months.

Love Converse. Used to be Made in the USA, but now they're Chinese Sweatshop shoes. They're great, but if you do a lot of walking, they'll last you 9-12 months.

Try to recycle them. :) (see Leather vs. Synthetic Thread)

V3gan--that's the part that really pisses my off, that shoes only last a few months. I think they do it on purpose so you'll buy them again, and again, and again.

my shoes always last a long time, maybe you people just need to learn to walk properly. My converse are going on over a year now.

For sandals, I've always gotten Tevas. I've also recently bought my first pair of Chacos, which I absolutely adore. Birkenstock makes a few good leather-free pairs, too (which I also have because I have a sandal fetish ). You can find Birkenstocks at www.veganstore.com and if you do a search for Tevas & Chacos, you'll find plenty of sites to get them from (if you can't find them in your area, that is).

Otherwise, I've had a lot of luck buying shoes from http://veganessentials.com/ They're an awesome company, as well as the others mentioned above. They may be a bit pricier, but the quality is much better than if you would buy the cheap plastic shoes from payless.

BTW> Pangea is having a clearance on a lot of shoes right now, so be sure to check out the veganstore link above!

One more thing- as said above, New Balance makes *many* leather-free shoes. I have two pairs of hikers & 3 pairs of running shoes from them right now & love them all. If you're interested and can't find decent ones in your area, check out the website for New Balance Web Express. They give you the stats on what each style is made of and have excellent service.

Any more shoe questions, ask me. My fetish for sandals extends to shoes in general.

I don't know just how cruelty free they are, but I emailed New Balance and this was their response:

Thank you for your interest in New Balance!

ALL of the following are made with synthetic materials. However

please note that we do use many types of different glues depending

on what is available. Please be aware that some of our glues

will contain animal products as many glues do. So just becauase

the shoe does contain all synthetic leather does not mean it

will be completely vegan. Also to clarify we do not mix real

and synthetic leathers on any shoe, it's either leather or synthetic

period.

I ordered a few pairs of shoes recently from Fredericks of Hollywood. Just be sure to read the item description so you know that they aren't leather. http://www.fredericks.com/category.a...Hosiery&Page=1

What I want to know is why shoes branded "vegan" i.e. from a vegan shoe company (online or a shop front) cost twice as much as the leather 'brand' name equivalent?

I was looking for a pair of boots this winter and the suede ones started at 49.95 (AUD) and went up to about 100.00 for a quality brand (for flat soles not heels) while the 'vegan' ones I found on the web started at 120 (AUD)?

I eventually ended up buying a no-brand fake-suede pair from a department store because I was so sick of looking around.

<edited to add>

I read another post somewhere and I think it was Kristab (sorry if not) who said something like wearing faux leather/suede advertises the real thing? I think its exactly the opposite.

My friends asked where I got my boots because they are really nice and I told them how cheap they were (59.95). And I'm like feel how nice the 'suede' is (not while wearing them BTW that would just be pervy) and they're like oh they're so soft. When I told them they were fake they wanted to check the label.

When people realise that material can be as durable, smooth and warm as leather/suede (and c'mon you have to admit suede and leather as gross as they are, are warm and durable) AND that they can get them a lot cheaper I think they fake it more often. Which is what we all want isn't it? Less leather use?

Well, my husband had hemp shoes for a while, and he loved them. I don't think they made his feet look puffy at all. I really really really like the ones that veganessentials have right now. I'm going to be ordering them for my hubby soon:
