Let me confess because I feel really bad. I brought soy cheese. I made a HUGE mistake of assuming it would be vegan, normally I check the ingredients. I didn't realise until I got home after I had some that it has casein in it

Don't feel bad. It wasn't on purpose... Plus, from what I have read online, A LOT of vegan have made this mistake. It's a logical assumption... Don't beat yourself up over it...

Don't beat yourself up...I've done the same thing, and I'd be willing to bet that a lot of other people here have, too.

So cheer up, buttercup.

That sucks. Don't feel bad. It's so annoying that that cheese exists -- I guess it's for lactose intolerant people, but some of it looks identical to vegan cheeses (Galaxy brand, I'm looking at you..!). When I first started looking for vegan cheeses, I would stand in front of the refrigerated section for like 10 minutes reading labels.

So sorry no worries though, live and learn! I've noticed a few brands of soy cheese that contain casein, it's a shame. If you'd like to do something active to help you feel better, maybe you could write the company and explain that you're vegan and their consumer base may expand if they left out the casein. Vegans can be pretty loyal to their veg-friendly products. I'd be happy to write in with you as well!

Ugh yes! Galaxy is the one I'm thinking of too. My mom bought it for me and was SO excited, thinking it was vegan.

I did the same thing a few months ago. I grabbed the wrong one and didn't notice until I got home but luckily I hadn't opened it yet so I was able to bring it back to the store and exchange it. Hell I'd still try to exchange it even if you opened it. That stuff is expensive.

I made a similar mistake recently, when I bought some soy yoghurt that ended up having a milk-derived strain of probiotic in it.

I think it's inevitable, and what matters is that your heart is in the right place.

I've made that mistake. Sometimes it's just a brain fart. I gave the cheese to someone who ate it instead of cow's milk cheese. So it ended up a good thing since it reminded them that there are nondairy alternatives. Now they eat soy cheese more often than they did before.

This is not huge. It's a learning experience. I think all vegans become more and more diligent at reading labels.

Been there. Give yourself a pat on the back for being such a caring person, buy some new cheese and move on. You're doing a wonderful thing so don't let it get you down.

I have done the samething. I was buying this soy cheese that was began but decided to try rice cheese instead. A week into enjoying it I read the ingredients and it had casein AND rennet in it. I felt so stupid.

Mistakes happen. But I personally find it ridiculously frustrating that you get SO CLOSE with those stupid soy cheeses, and then they go and add in a milk product!

Ive totally made this mistake. It really annoys me to no end that a rice cheese would contain casein!!! It's just illogical and silly.

I ate thai last night and found out that it had oyster sauce in it... I could taste it, I didn't like it, but I didn't want to offend my company so I ate it anyway. No difference to me (apart from my disgust) or the animals resulted in me eating it. No big deal.

Once a few years ago I went vegan for a week and my mom bought me grocery store soy cheese. We all thought it was vegan and I never realized that it wasn't until after that week...whoops. Guess I wasn't vegan after all for that week.

But I can relate. I'd use Galaxy's rice cheese slices (which are vegan, and advertised as vegan) but one day I decided to try the American slices. Turns out the American slices aren't vegan. WHYYYY!?!??!?!?!? booo.

Don't worry about it. We've all done it :p

I have done the same thing. I assumed that a company making soy cheese would realize the majority of their clientel is looking for vegan cheese so it would be. You know hat they say about ASSuming...

Quote:
