Gee, what do you want in a kids' movie? Kill off the main characters at the end? some wild sexual trysts?

Nope. Kids like predictable, happy endings. They relate to themes of abandonment (loss of parents), and delight in seeing it all work out for the characters in the end.

Yep, "Ice Age" was a good kids movie. Not worthy of an Oscar, as was Shark Attack3: the Megalodon, but a good movie nonetheless.

Or maybe parents like their kids to see films with predictable, happy endings.

As a kid I was always struck a lot more with sad endings than happy ones. Like Old Yeller... the dog actually dies! The kid has to shoot his own dog! It was sad and memorable; I saw it 30 years ago and it stuck with me. In comparison, I honestly can't remember most of the plot, or the ending of Ice Age.

Most people remember Old Yeller because they cried. Not the experience most kids want when they head out to the theater. One or two movies like that in childhood is fine. Take a kid to one of those a few times a year and watch the Kiddie Prozac prescriptions increase.

ice age was friggin hilarious...our bus watched it on our south georgia trip where we travel around the state for 3 days and every1 had fun and kept making references to the movie...the dodo bird scene is the best when the sloth puts his hand out and runs with the watermelon...lmao. and then he slams it on the ground...hehehe
