Good Job! What an idiot he is, and your better of without him. I wouldn't want a doctor who not only doesn't understand nutritional needs but a doctor who would insult a patient.

How annoying is that! I think you just struck unlucky cos most Aussie GP's seem pretty ok with veg*nism in my experience.

I would have probably asked him why he feels that way, and shared the contact info of some certified vegan nutritionists I know it.

Good work.
Did you enjoy the look on his face? Whenever I told doctors 'your fired' their expression was as if the whitehouse janitor just told the president he was 'fired'

If your healthy dont be in any rush to find a new GP. In emergencies you wont get the doctor you know anyway and GPs are notorious for over-diagnosing and over-prescribing to the point that most civilized countries tell people not to get annual checkups because they cause more harm than good, on the average.

In my mind the conversation shoulda gone something like this ...

"stop being stupid and start eating meat again like a normal person "

"Thank you for the advice Dr Duck"

"pardon?"

"I definitely just heard a quack"

He is as ignorant as anyone with minimal nutritional education. It still baffles me that doctors do not actually study nutrition yet feel qualified to give dietary advice.

Good for you. I have an OB/GYN that insists that I can't get my dietary calcium from rice milk (which is fortified the same way cow's milk is with the same amount of calcium) and is always super-skeptical.

I still go to her, but it irks me.

If something like that ever happens again, you might consider what Josh James suggested and use it as an educational opportunity. Gotta be casual and friendly about it in order to better ensure they'll take you seriously, though -- many physicians seem to be irked by patients who haven't officially studied medicine but do their own research.

But regardless of what the docs think, ya gotta stand strong and take responsibility for your own health -- power to the patients!

This!
My mom just went to a new GP and when she informed the doctor she doesn't eat meat the doctor became super concerned- "where do you get your protein??" So now my mom is all freaked out that she isn't getting enough protein.

I went to the same GP shortly after, and didn't mention my diet. She told me that I was in perfect health, and the only advice she gave me was not to eat fast food very often.

I would LOVE to tell my GP that I know far more about nutrition and healthy eating than she does.

I took my dad to his pulmonary specialist and when the doc heard my dad was doing better taking herbal meds, he got furious and said he either stop the herbs or find another doc. My dad asked what was wrong with herbs, and the doc said they can kill you. I pointed out how many more people die from pharmaceutical drugs than from herbs. He got more furious. My dad looked at me and said, well, lets find another doc... and we left! ;D
