I would recommend oils as well.. if you have a diffuser you should put some tea tree oil or eucalyptus and lavendar oil in it next to wherever you're laying down. Smells a little funny but it has always helped my breathing whenever I get sick.
Lemon tea w/honey will help your throat too.. and also eating an orange or a grapefruit may perk your body up with it's vitamin C.
echinacea and zinc will help you get over it quicker. when i'm stuffed up i mix a bit of eucalyptus and peppermint oils in my burner but if i have a headache sometimes strong scents will make it worse. your headache is probably sinus-related though so clearing the congestion will probably help the headache.
can you use nasal sprays at all? i got one for sinus congestion and it seems to help and is scented with menthol which seems to work well.
letting it drain through the throat may help your head feel better but i'll give you an upset stomach. during my last cold or virus or whatever that was, i was queezy because of the post nasal drip thing. i found it easier on my stomach to lean forward to keep it from dripping down my throat.
gross i know.
but you didn't mention runny nose, is it just stuffy but not runny? it might not be a cold but just something in the air. i'm in a farming community and the air seems to be thick and dirty some days, my sinuses dry out and swell and i feel like i'm trying to breathe through a very thin straw. because of it i get bad sinus headaches and congestion, and since sinuses are connected to all the other holes in your head, it can cause sore throat, earaches etc
this stuff called COLD SNAP (which they used to have at Whole foods but now they dont for some reason, but you can order it online).
it is this amazing supplement of chinese herbs and it ROCKS. its best to take it at the very first onset of a cold. you know when you can feel it coming? like you get sneezy a bit or a slight throat scratchy warning? if you crank this stuff, it will knock that cold right out! I thought my husband was full of **** on this thing, but he was right. I'm a believer now.
If you already HAVE the cold, if you take this it will speed up the cold. give you an immune boost, etc. but its definetly good to have on hand so you can take it as it first begins.
I am such a freak for this stuff. It really really works. My husband's dad even has him send it to him in Singapore.
here is one of many links I found to places selling it.
For the congestion, put some vaporub or essential oils under your nose, microwave a wet washcloth to get it hot, wrap it in a plastic bag then in another dry washcloth, fold it up and put it over your eyes, nose, and forehead for about 15 minutes. Works like a charm.
Sore throat--sip hot water with a bit of lemon and, if you're not opposed to it, honey. Or, get this Traditional Medicinals Tea called Throat Coat--it's awesome stuff.
Garlic and ginger are very good for chest congestion, so if you feel anything moving south, eat some spicy garlicky gingery food. I agree with Cookingveg on the wasabi thing--wasabi clears up my sinuses like nothing else. Have some veggie sushi with some pickled ginger and a healthy dab of wasabi. Mmmm...maybe that's what I'll have for lunch...
Arbonne has some new incredible products for colds called Remedy. They have an herbal vapor soak, an herbal vapor rub, and Get Well Soon Dietary Supplement with echinacea. Check it out at www.arbonne.com.
Make an infusion of cloves (1tbsp), garlic (2cloves), cinnamon sticks (1 or2), and fresh lemons cut and squeezed (and honey, if you still eat honey) It's very soothing for a sore throat and smells good with the cloves and lemon. Strain liquid into a mug and sip.
Crushed Red Peppers
-simmer for a few minutes. make about a cups worth, since it will be spicey and strong. Put in enough red peppers to make you sweat like crazy, and garlic is a natural antibiotic, so put in at least 2 or 3 cloves. Eat it all.
What I do for this is I take 15 grams of vitamin C. I take a multivitamin. I take trace elements/minerals multi-supplement. I walk for 2 hours. I take an enema and laxatives. I also have dabbed listerine just inside each nostril as often as I feel like which can often cure the congestion in minutes completely or knock a wormhole of clear passage through the congestion. Any of these other remedies has been known to bring a rapid cure within 10s of minutes or hours. There are umpteen treatments in natural medicine for these symptoms. One other thing: bottled drinking water instead of chromium six/waste tap water. Often this water which will make me sick in 30 seconds if untreated is not entirely treated, thus when I was drinking it years ago it caused me to get sick with the symptoms you describe occasionally. Now I almost never get sick, all right I never get sick. Your symptoms may also be attributable to pneumonic boeuf 'n bird, dead animals with all kinds of illnesses including pneumonia and other respiratory ailments.
Do you have a sinus infection? Congestion? I have the best solution:
See if you can find a sinus irrigator or neti pot. They are small plastic things that looks sort of like a pipe. Take some warm salt water (about 3/4 cup - use sea salt, if possible), and to it add a dropper full of liquid Echinacea and a dropper full of liquid Astragalus. Use this mixture to irrigate your sinuses. Do this several times per day.
Additionally, take the Echinacea and the Astragalus orally several times per day.
If you have a sore throat, gargle with Hydrogen Peroxide - beats the heck out of salt water.
High doses of vit. C are unneceassary. Above 3 g nearly nothing is absorbed. With 15 g it acts as a laxative. Maybe iron will be absorbed in proportions that can´t be called good anymore. A cold won´t go away quicker with vitamin C.
