I hate watching football, basketball, baseball and soccer.

And how can you care about who wins? It's not like you even know anyone playing.

And doesn't the amount of money they make disgust you?

I like watching skating, because that is pretty to watch...esp the couples. Sometimes, gymnastics too...and diving competition...

But, the Super Bowl? WHYYYYYYYYY?????????????????

Dunno, I've never understood it either. People have been paying upwards of $2,000's for super bowl seats, most of which were soso seats... for an event that's air'd on TV for FREE!?!

I don't hate sports. I like watching men run around in tight spandex pants

Yarn, I'm in San Diego too . I've been staying inside to avoid all the craziness and whatnot.

Off topic: Have you been to this restaraunt (in Escondido): http://www.thevegetarian.info/, I've been meaning to try it out for a while now.

[Disclaimer: I am well-aware that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm sick of being reminded of that (by non-VB people.)]

Sports are great. Top 10 reasons for sports:

1. The Sports Bar factor: Social camaraderie.

2. Enhances the connection between people and the community they live within.

3. Reality TV? Its one of the few things on the tele that is not almost-always predictable.

4. Gimme the Love: High-fives.

5. The human history factor: Sports is the last active form of inter-tribal battle that mankind has.

6. The rituals: Sports, for those who enjoy them, are positive punctuation points in time (I.e. things to look forward to).

7. The geopolitical factor: Sports makes places like Buffalo, NY cool.

8. The water cooler factor: Instant conversation piece.

9. The existential psychology of sports: A lot of people live without drama and/or hope. Sports gives people drama and/or hope.

10. The undeniable truth: Humans are competitive animals. Sports is simply an outlet for our competitive nature.

What I love about sports: TEAMWORK.

Sure, it may sound contrived, but I find the idea of individuals coming together, physically pushing themselves and each other to reach a goal really romantic. That's one of the reasons I love watching (or being a part of) an underdog team that, through committment to each other and the passion of the game, defeats the odds. Team effort is powerful stuff.

Plus, come one--sports are about playing! And there never seems to be enough time to play. Physical activity is so much fun. It's totally refreshing and relieving.

Sports should be a tool to teach teamwork and good sportsmanship. It shouldn't always be about winning.

Veggiemonster, I live in Escondido, I did go to the Vegatarian a few years ago. I think they are only open at lunch time but I am not sure. It has been here for a long time.

Oops, I just looked at the link you posted and they are open all day. It is a small place. Thanks for the link by the way.

Amen, sista! I conciously left out all benefits of sports-participation in favor of focusing on the couch-commando side of sports. Not just because I could write on the benefits of organized physical activities for hours, but I'd like to think that it's a no-brainer - organized sports are good for the mind as well as the body.

Sports should be about winning. Always. Teamwork leads to winning, but the goal of utterly dominating and vanquishing an opponent so that you may revel in their pain while basking in the glory of adoring fans must never be forgotten.

Hhehe, you mean like next season when the Toronto Raptors go all the way we can revel in the pain of every other NBA team that fell by the wayside? lol

And talking smack.

Hey Robert, the Raptors without Vince couldn't win the WNBA. With Vince, they could ONLY win the WNBA.

I don't have so much a problem with sports as i do with *professional* sports. The whole concept of professional sports sickens me. The idea that some one could be payed just to play a game is bad enought - but to get paid the ridiculously huge salaries that the average pro sports player gets?! Unreal!

Especially when there's starving children in the world and homeless people freezing in the streets, it angers me to no end to hear about so-n-so getting payed some millions just because he can run fast & throw a ball really far.

I absolutely abhor pro sports. Especially the ones that rely on abusing animals for entertainment.

T-Mac is money!!! I definitely agree. I still think that Vince is heading to New York in the next 3 years. The NBA would love that - think of all the jersey sales! It'd almost be worth going to the Garden to see him...

I have issues with pro. athletes making the money they make, too, but my beef is not with the athletes nor even the owners. Rather, it's the government. We should be taxing these guys like Canada does. They'd still rake it in, and if they didn't like it, where would they go? Canada??? (Hey maybe Toronto would have a shot, then!)

So my problem is not so much that the athletes get paid too much (most of the highest-paid guys are underpaid, for all the money they bring into the organizations through ticket sales, gear sales, and commercial sponsors) it's that they don't get taxed enough. Capping the professional athlete's salary at $150k won't get one dime out to the needy. Taxing $42mil at 45% will.

I'm with ya Max. You know, I look at Muhammad Ali and some other pro sports stars that go screwed up beyond repair from pushing their bods to that point and I think to myself, yeah, if I was in their shoes I'd want a hefty sum too so that my kids and their kids are taken care of. Hey, Muhammad's daughter kick ass don't she?
