Well, what *do* you want to do?

Don't be afraid of saying what you want to do - the worst that can happen is that, as you've said, people aren't supportive. But they may well be supportive even if they aren't too thrilled with your plans.

Or, are the compromises you can make? For example, maybe a double degree, or you could work part-time, and study-part time..

Elaborate so we can help!

What is it that you want to do?

My friend really wants to do a music tech course where she could end up being a roadie, or a music tech at a venue, or lighting stages, or whatever. She's really enthusiastic about it and is really looking forward to it. The good news is her parents and friends are totally supportive. The bad news is some of her teachers give her sh!t about not aiming high enough, not going to university, etc. But she's doing it anyway. Uh, I'm not sure of my point, but it's something like...you know best what is right for you. Not other people.

ETA: also, she really thought her parents would disapprove. But they didn't. You might get more support than you'd thought, if you tell people.

What interests you? What are your hobbies? What subjects in school are you good at, and what subjects do you like? What is your dream job? We can try to help if you answer some of these questions!

ETA: Oops, I missed that you said "if you tell them what you really want to do..."

My best advice is to do what is true to your heart. Please don't worry about what others have to say about your choices - not your parents, friends, teachers, or anyone else. What matters is what YOU want to do. After all, you are going to be the one going to work every day, not your friends and family. Do whatever is close to your heart.

Brilliant!!!

However, let me play devil's advocate a moment - I can understand why some people still have concerns about the future prospects for those who go to study music. It is tough, and often even if you're brilliant, a lot of it relies on luck.

But, I believe that whenever possible you should do what you want. And, if for you, that is music, then go for it!!!

There are so many routes to take, music colleges/conservatoires, academic courses, music tech etc. You can often do a mixture too!

I personally did a joint degree in Japanese and Music, and I'm now going into music teaching with an aim to be at a conservatoire by 2008. So, I've managed a compromise - I've done, and am doing what I love, but I'm providing myself with other skills and qualifications so that a) I can have a back up b) I can support myself either during college, or during times when musical work may be scarce.

Admittedly it means I go into the purely performing side later in life, but it is a route I would wholeheartedly recommend. If you try presenting it like that to friends and family they may be more supportive - it doens't mean that you *have* to then follow that route. It only means you can show you've thought it through and are mature enough to appreciate why some might have concerns.

As for your sister laughing at you, I am sorry. Could it be that because you've not talked about it much, she is therefore a bit surprised?

do what you love and you will love what you do.

too many people focus on what society wants. society wants you to waste away 8 hours a day in a cubicle making other people rich.

do what makes you happy -

Go for it freakacide! You're lucky you know what you want to do at all, lots of people have no idea. I like schoska's idea of having a backup though, something to help you through, or to fall back on if need be.

Good luck!

Plastics??

Anyway it could be my sister is a bit suprised. I indeed haven't talked much about it... I have to choose a profile, too, and it's based on biology and stuff. that's like my backup

Thanks so much for your support! I do now have the feeling not everyone thinks I'm mad, haha

I made a selection of schools I'd like to go to, and checked the homepages... And its so difficult to come in! That's why I really need my parent's support, I can't do it on my own I'm afraid... But I'll just try to tell 'em and see what they think. I'm gonna try anyway xD

Thanks
