Well that's how my boss slammed my vegetarian lifestyle today when I went back to work having had a virus (like most other people I know - except none of them are vegetarian!). She lectured me about what I eat (except she doesn't know what I eat!) and quizzed me about protein sources and wasn't impressed with my reply. She actually said "you don't eat properly". I have been hurt and annoyed all day. I bet my diet is much better than hers!

Sorry about that. I think that it's important not to fall into that trap of trying to justify yourself to others, particularly since those who obviously lack the knowledge to give proper advice. If it happens again (with her or with anyone else), you could ask for their degree in nutrition before they dare to give you advice or judge your diet.

Your boss had no right to slam your vegetarian lifestyle. You are an employee, therefore she dosen't have the right to dictate to you how you live your life beyond the 4 to 8 hrs that you work there. Further more she dosen't have the right to slam you for what you believe in. She has the choice to agree or disagree with your choice to be a vegetarian. She has no say in what happens except in regards to your work. She stepped over the line with what she said to you. I would say that she had no idea what a vegetarian is, however this had nothing to do with your work performance. And so long as it dosen't affect your work, it's none of her business. You are right to be angry with her, I can't blame you, I would be too if someone did that to me!! Don't take it personally, and now that you know that she's anti-vegetarian, don't mention it again unless asked.

That's something that's probably gonna happen anytime you get even the sniffles. People are always quick to blame any ailment on vegetarianism. Nevermind that they might have the exact same cold/flu/virus/ whatever but that is, of course, totally different when it comes to them.

The protein thing, blaming sickness on veg*nism....you'll hear it all so much it will eventually start to become either amusing, or you'll just stop caring.

It was rude of your boss to slam you. Don't let it get to you too badly.

ack...Protein does not fight colds/flu, veggies and fruit do..Vitamin C etc...I suppose she might be talking about zinc found in animal flesh thats a stretch though..as far as I know..Vitamin C is what you need when you are sick...I'd just blow those comments off..she has no idea what shes talking about.

Thank you for all your lovely support.

I emailed my boss the protein page from The Vegetarian Society's website today. Knowledge is power. I take my health and vegetarian lifestyle seriously, and uneducated, crass comments need correcting.

As for the health aspect, I had a flu/virus earlier in the year but it was the first time I had been sick for over 4 years. And, I haven`t even needed to go to the Dr for about 13 years - so I wipe my nose on the sleeve of those who put us down!!!! Ya!!

Get the sniffles, loose your keys, run late for a meeting, get a rock stuck in the treads of your tire, have your camera's batteries go flat RIGHT when you're wanting to take that OH so PERFECT shot.....

All these things and more are affected by not eating meat cause we all know omnis NEVER have these problems, only veg*ns do.

Seriously, though, document the conversation and her comment and be sure to put in the date and time that it happened, too (also document any comments/pages/etc that you respond with). Do this with any other conversations that you and her have as well re: you and veg*nism.

I'm sure HR would LOVE to read about managers who moonlight as nutritionists.

I agree! Especially if you are vegetarian based on religious beliefs!

I can't believe your boss would do that... well I don't know your boss, and the are a ton of ignorant people out there...

But I would have a fit if someone at my work talked to me like that!

I actually had a screaming match with my old boss (who ended up getting demoted because he was abusive) kinda involving me being a vegetarian. He was trying to make some stupid point on something, and was trying to come up with an illustrated example using bacon, and asked me how bacon is package..!?!? I told him I have no clue, because I dont eat bacon, Ive never purchased bacon, and I dont go over to the meat department to check everything out when Im at the grocery store. This apparently ruined his whole argument and threw him into a frenzy

In the end, it was one of many nails in his coffin that I and his other subordinates used to have him removed.

That can actually happen. I was drinking water at work the other day and maybe I drank too much too fast because I ended up choking and spitting the water all over the computer keyboard, my desk, and the floor.

Also, when my mom drinks water too fast, she ends up coughing. For her, it's a combination of acid reflux disease and a post-nasal drip and I think drinking liquid too fast irritates her throat.

Not that you wanted to know all that, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in.

My paretns blame everything on veg*nism for me. If my hair is frizzy, it's because I don't eat meat. If my skin is dry or lips chapped, it's because I don't eat meat. If I am hungry, it's because I don't eat meat. If I'm not hungry, it's because I don't eat meat. If I have a runny nose, it's because I don't eat meat. If I have a cough, if I can't sleep, if I sleep too much... etc. It can be very annoying!
