I'm routinely surprised by items in our everyday lives, that are perfectly free for the eating, but we normally discard as a non-food.

What are some things you have discovered? Share your experiences with the rest of us, and feel free to post pictures and/or links.

*** Watermelon Rind. I started eating the rind and seeds of my watermelon a few years ago. For some reason it tastes good to me now. I just have to make sure I wash it. Also, I found several recipes for Fried Watermelon Rind

*** Pea plant leaves. The entire plant is edible. Most cultures only eat the shoots when the plant is young, but that it only because the adult plant is so chewy. I plan to grow it in my garden this year just so I can harvest young branches, and the leaves. Tougher parts can be thrown in with green smoothies.

*** Garlic "buds." The long stalk and "flower bud" you get shooting up from the ground when you grow garlic. I've never tried it, but it's apparently delicious when thrown into a stir fry.

we eat dandelion greens and lamb's quarters when others pull them as weeds

I'd heard that about dandelions, but I've seen so many different "weeds" that look like dandelions, that I was afraid of eating the wrong thing.

I have read that juicing banana peels is super nutritive. I almost considered getting a juicer because of that. But limited shelf space for a specialty item for one thing I probably won't do very often didn't make sense.

I honestly have nothing to add; I'm a foodie with eclectic tastes and study food and such, so I hope I see something surprising...I'll check in with this thread and see if there's something new to me.

I know that you can eat the skin of both mango and kiwi although I have never tried it myself - I can imagine that you need to have a fruit that is free from pesticide.

On this forum I heard of people eating kiwi with the fuzzy skin still on, and that was new to me!
The watermelon rind is also interesting- when I was young my mom always told me never to eat the "white part"

Raw corn,. Seriously I read about it on a blog one day, and was explaining it to my mom and boyfriend, they said it would taste bad and so I just picked up a raw corn on the cob and bit it, I was shocked at how much sweeter it was raw! Plus I hate corn but raw it's not half bad

you can eat raw corn? I thought I watched a show that stated it was inedible. I'll have to give it a try.

Manzanita berry wine. I didn't think people could make use of manzanita berries.

And the cambium layers of certain deciduous trees. Not really a culinary treat, but something you can eat if you are lost in the forest, which is something every vegan and vegetarian is apparently at risk of facing at some point in their lives.

Nasturtium leaves and flowers - It grows like crazy in my parents backyard every spring. It's kind of peppery. I wish I could develop a taste for it because there's such an abundance.

Purslane - It's a weed here in So California. But very healthy.

Broccoli stalks - Usually people just eat the florets, but you can grate the stalk using a food processor and put it in stir fry.

Anything I have left over that I don't necessarily want to eat (like kiwi skins or orange peels) goes into my juicer.

I always eat kiwi with the skin on. It's not nearly as fuzzy as you might imagine. Mangoes, only sometimes.

Something about the idea of eating kiwi skin really grosses me out.

It's not like it's cute and fuzzy, like a peach. It's all bristly and course. Like a boar.
