How many of these have you run into? A song you like and then a friend explains, yeah, it's a great song, for being about bear maulings, or something.

my most recent ones were:

bounce - system of a down : it's about an orgy!

my name is mud - primus : it's about killing his father!

Ha ha ha--I do this all the time. I thought Quinn the Eskimo was about a nice man who sold ice cream. Nooooooo! it's about a drug dealer! I didn't figure this one out until my husband showed me the lyrics "when the Quinn the Eskimo gets here, everybody's gonna want a dose"

And I remember lots of songs I used to sing off the radio as a child and never understood were about sex. Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band ---I thought it was about going to see a fireworks show in the afternoon because of the lines "sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight"---not about shagging in the afternoon.
A lot of people don't know that Greenday's Longview is about pulling the pud .. you know, greasing the monkey

Hmm....well when I was a kid I didn't know Brick by the Ben Folds Five was about an abortion.
When I was in ninth grade, I had to bring in song lyrics to sort of describe myself. Well, I waited until the last minute and I didn't even know how to use the internet back then. I ended up copying lyrics from the only tape I owned: "Mary Jane" by Alanis Morissette. What the hell was I thinking back then?

My brother explained the lyrics of another song to me: "BYOB" by System of a Down

"Every city gripped in oil

Crying freedom

Handed to obsoletion

Still you feed us lies from the tablecloth"

I didn't know it was a protest song at first!

this wasn't me, but when I was in a scholarship pageant one of the girls did a gymnastics routine to "Walk this Way" by Aerosmith. The coordinator of the pageant told her that song was about hitch-hiking.

"I took a big chance at the high school dance with a missy who was ready to play"

Oh dear. Even as dense as I am can figure out what "kitty in the middle" means. ha ha

My friend was tellingme about a song he sang as a lad that he never knew was rude until much later:

I'm a c*nt

I'm a c*nt

I'm a country farmer

I'm so completely unaware about lyric meanings that I never knew this one even though I loved Primus back in the day!

So, there are probably 400 or 500 songs that would surprise me.

2 become 1 by the spice girls, I can't believe I used to sing + dance to that in the playground when I was a kid.

One of my friends was shocked when reading the lyrics to 'Chain reaction' he really didn't know what it was about.

As a kid I heard that as "Everybody's gonna wanna doze." I could never figure that out, because everyone seemed so excited about Quinn's arrival, and then he finally shows up and everybody falls asleep! LOL

Me too. When I was in 3rd grade, my favorite song was "Love Shack" by the B-52's. I imagined the Love Shack as being just a big dance club that everyone couldn't wait to visit.
I actually took song lyrics quite seriously as a child and young teen. I remember at 14 approaching my choir director about the possibility of me not singing the second and third verses of "The Magic Flute" because I believed it promoted an unhealthy use of magic for selfish purposes. She was shocked, almost indignant at first because she thought I was asking if the entire choir could just not sing it, but she calmed down and was more understanding of my concerns when she realized I was just asking for permission to close my mouth during those verses and be quiet while the rest of the choir sang.

Would I do that now? Eh, I doubt it. I can't imagine any choir I could be in as an adult singing "The Magic Flute" unless it was with a children's choir. I wish I could find the lyrics now and look at them again. Unfortunately, Google is only giving me the entire opera "The Magic Flute," and I just remember the song as "The Magic Flute." Something about "I wish I had some magic thing..."
There are many songs like that for me...lol.

I don't listen to this kind of music, but that Souja boy song, I've heard it way too many times. I didn't know what some lyrics meant and most of my friends refused to tell me. XD

This is a classic one: "Turning Japanese" is supposedly about masturbation.

I always heard that was slang for your orgasm face.

She Bop--now that's about masturbation. I recall when we saw in interview with Cyndi Lauper where she explained the meaning that i was the only person who still admitted to liking to song. Everyone else just said it was too gross for words.
*mouth drops* I just looked up lyrics to both She Bop and Turning Japanese and... omg! I used to love those songs when I was younger (I'd still rock out to them now, of course) but... haha. Wow. I wonder how many people really know what these lyrics are about. Wow.
Lyrically, No Woman, No Cry by Marley seems to be really saying: No girl, don't cry, it will be all right -- not, "no woman = happiness".

On the other hand, it's hard to believe Marley didn't realize and expect the obvious interpretation, so who knows...
she bop rules.
I had no idea Golden Brown by the Stranglers was about heroin...

which was a bit dim of me really...!
