Hey! I'm Bipolar Helper and I'm looking in to making a new healthy life adjustment. I'm really not very old. I'm not even thirty but I'm having health complications with daily medicines I'm taking for psychatric reasons and my cholestrol is too high because I eat way too much meat and I just can't do that with my smoking habit and expect to be healthy. I know I need to do more than just eat right and exercise, I'm also trying to alleviate stress and anxiety. It's kinda tough because I don't sleep well. I just know it begins with my diet and getting the fat out of it. I was hoping to find someone who is or has gone through some of the things I've shared here. I'd love to get some advice or even answer a question if someone feels they can help.

Hi there. Welcome to VB.

I can't say I've been through this but I do have some advice.

It sounds like you already know pretty much what you need to stop doing (eating and smoking) to make yourself well, try stopping one thing at a time. I'll bet even a small improvement in your diet would make a huge difference.

You haven't said whether you were thinking about going vegetarian or vegen but the fact that you're here indicates that you might be considering it. If that's the case I would also approach that one thing at a time, and as much as you love it, bacon could be a good place to start.

Hey, welcome to VeggieBoards. Check out the Tip of the Day thread in the New to Vegetarianism forum. It has a lot of really helpful and easy to understand information. In fact, the whole forum is great.

Hope to see you around the boards

My advice - one step at a time! When I went veg, I cut out beef. Then pork. Then chicken. Then, eventually, fish. It made it a lot easier. Make adjustments to your diet when you are comfortable doing so. Some people enjoy going all at once. Others take years.

Try different fake meats - veggie burgers. "Chicken" nuggets. Get a veggie pizza instead of pepperoni, and order it with half the cheese. Get a black bean burrito instead of a carne asada burrito.

And if you fall back, dust yourself off and try again. Kudos to you for deciding to go healthy. I leaned heavily on "how to go veg" books and cookbooks - maybe that's an avenue for you as well.

There are a lot of ex-smokers here too so you might do a search for givin' up the smokes. Good luck!

try to love the pig more thn the bacon... picture what its life is/was and what it could be or would have been... picture your cleaner and healthier arteries and heart, picture losing weight, having more energy, and feeling and looking better... picture doing something good for tnhe environment, fighting pollution and global warming... picture being part of thne solution instead of part of the problem ... you're on the right track because you're making a positive, life-affirming choice... good for you!

Love bacon? Try either LightLife Fakin' Bacon Smoky Tempeh Strips (found in the refrigerator case of natural foods stores like Whole Foods Market, Wild Oats, or Trader Joe's) or get yourself some tofu and try this homemade version.

No, Smart Bacon is a different product made by the same company. I didn't much care for it myself, but then everyone likes something different when it comes to meat substitutes. Smart Bacon may be a lot easier to find, actually. I think my regular grocery store has it in the produce section, but I have to go to Whole Foods for the Fakin' Bacon.
