My name is Lela- I'm a 31 year old Buddhist mom and business owner living in Columbia, SC. My daughters (ages 6 and 9) and I decided to go veg for environmental and ethical reasons last October and haven't looked back since! We do eat cage-free eggs and animal-rennet-free cheeses , but pass on all meats, shellfish and gelatin. I was very hesitant to go old turkey with a picky eater who has always been underweight and was just 5 years old at the time, but she's actually gaining weight and eating a wider variety of foods.

The kids are proud of their decision and I am immensely proud of them, but we are keenly aware that we're in the minority here (especially here in the ultra-conservative Deep South). The kids teachers looked at me like I was crazy when I told them of our new diet, the father of one of my girl's best friends refused to make her a veg dinner on their most recent sleepover (which will be their last) and my family thinks that I might have gone off the deep end. So I am thrilled to discover this community of common-minded folk. I appreciate your letting me be a part and I hope to contribute something of value to the group.

Namaste...

Welcome Lelab

There are 10 veggie-friendly places listed here in Columbia

From the Vegan Connection - here is another list of those places to eat in Columbia, SC

Here is a story covered by a Columbia, SC news channel

Smart Kids go Vegetarian!

Don't feel intimidated just b/c you live in the south. If they were really back-woods neanderthals, they wouldn't dare promote vegetarianism in their newstories. Currently I live in West Virginia and even my grocery stores carry vegan soy burgers and Silk soymilk.

Hope you're enjoying VB. It's a fairly large community.

Hi! I'm in Richmond, VA, so I know what you mean feeling a bit out of place in the conservative south. Welcome to VB!

Oh, I agree Frank. And- unfortunately- they are plentiful around here.

That's the last time my daughter will eat meals there. Their kid is welcome here anytime, but I'm not puting my Chloe through that again.

Welcome! Hopefully your daughter will come out stronger from the experience. Seriously though, couldn't he make a peanut butter sandwich?
