Whenever I go very long without eating I feel very dizzy and lightheaded, weak, shaky, etc. People will come up to me and say, "Melissa, are you okay?!?! You look so pale!" I think my blood sugar just drops. Is this hypoglycemia? It goes away within a half hour if I eat something. It is really annoying because when it happens I don't trust myself to drive and usually the whole reason why I forgot to eat is because I was going someplace. Or once I felt the same way after I donated blood. I learned that my body wants to keep its blood after lying on the stupid table thingy for hours during my school day. (The blood drive was at my HS.) I felt so weak and the nurses kept telling me I looked horrible and wouldn't let me even sit up. And they made me drink two whole cans of coke. I would say that usually if I go 5-6 hours without eating or only eat a little bit during that time that is when it happens, though sometimes it is more or less. It is especially quick if I am active during that time. Should I worry or just be more responsible about eating on time?

This happens to me too. After a while you will be able to pin down a time frame. My trouble spot happents to be 2 hours after breakfast. If i dont eat something- I start getting very hot in the face, shaking, feeling like I might pass out and if it gets bad I get really disoriented too. It stinks. I am only like this now because I am pregnant. Once I have the baby I think it waill go away.

Make sure to always have a snack with you - I am always good for an emergency 1/2 PB&J in my pocketbook!

I have a luna bar permanently residing in the front pocket of my bag for this very reason. And I usually grab a bag of dried fruit or something whenever I leave the house.

It's probably not anything to worry about.. You just need to eat more often.

Yes, I get this, and my mother does, pretty bad. So she always carries around some emergency foods. Her MD told her is was "reactive hypoglycemia"

I was having the same problem and since diabetes is very BIG in my family I was tested for diabetes/hypoglycemia and the dr told me it was b/c I didn't eat meat!!!! and that my results were fine blahblahblah yet when I ate meat again after that I felt the same way. My grandma who is diabetic will do the prick test on me and has given me ideas for when I feel like that, she said a glass of orange helps right away.

You know, it could be hypoglycemia, but I believe that our bodies are just meant to eat every three hours or so. I can say that I get the same way when I go without eating, very funny feeling and lightheaded- especially if I miss breakfast. Start carrying some easy snacks.

This just happened to me yesterday b/c I hadn't eaten for 5 hours. I think it's important to stick to a regular eating schedule whenever possible, and always eat a filling breakfast.

If diabetes runs in your family, though, it can't hurt to get tested just to be safe.

Here is the thing...

Especially as many people have mentioned if diabetes runs in your family you need to be concerned about this. I would assume that it is hypoglycemia meaning that your body has some trouble maintaining a good level of blood sugar-I myself get this same reaction. My mom and my brother both have diabetes. And I have learned that if you don't eat more often and allow your blood sugar levels to peek and valley it really increases your chance of developing diabetes later. So I would agree with everyone you need to concious of this issue and be sure you have snacks with you when you are away from your fridge. It doesn't need to be anything big just enough to maintain a good blood sugar level.

Good luck..
