Sabertoothed cats implicated in extinction of North America's giant predatory birds!

Species moving into new habitats frequently out-compete or kill off competitors or other species, this isn't limited to humans.

In other words, annihilating other species is a fun pastime of ours, with or without technological assistance.
Your summation isn't really a fair representation. The very first paragraph of the article acknowledges that this is "one of palaeontology's longest-running and contentious debates."

Articles with this position and other, often opposing, arguments have been coming out regularly for decades. Most people in the field are fairly rational about it and believe that human and climatic matters factor into many of these cases.

The problem I have with the idea "annihilating other species is a fun pastime of ours" is that it gives people now an excuse to continue their bad behavior "OH well, humans are just evil and we've always been evil and destructive." Thing is, now we KNOW what we are doing to our habitats and other creatures. IN the past, folks were ignorant of the big picture, now we aren't but ideas such as "humans are evil and we've always been evil and enjoyed annihilating other species" give us the excuse not to change, because after all, we can't change our basic evil nature, can we?

We can't fall back on excuses like this anymore, we need to take responsibility for what we are doing NOW, instead of blaming folks in the past.

Those were other words. Still are even.

Australia is notorius for it's past and present racism against it's indigenous people. I can't help but view this information in light of that - not that I think it isn't true, I'm just saying that Native Americans killed many hundreds more buffalo than they needed and the Maori people were responsible for the extinction of the Moa, but you don't hear people continuing to go on about those things.
