GRRRR!!!

I've just read an article about how popular the Atkins diet is. You know, the "all meat no carbohydrates" one.

It's grown so much that red meat sales has risen!! The book sold over 2 million copies too!! Can you believe it??

People work so hard to promote vegetarianism and veganism, and then people like that go out promoting meat!! A diet of mainly meat is SO unhealthy How can it be allowed???

to ATKINS!!!

Anyone got any figures / articles on the steady growth of veg*nism?

Atkins boks are everywhere!!

I don't dislike some of the diet such as eliminating the simple carbs and sugars part but I think that is all that is neccassary if you want to lose weight.

Eating excessive meat on Atkins is unhealthy and I think in the future Atkin propenents are going to come to realize that.

Thank goodness (for the animals) that most people don't follow the diet long-term, although cutting out simple carbs and sugars permanantly would do everyone a world of good!!

I'm a big optimist. I'm sure this Atkins diet thing is happening for a reason.

Meat doesn't do good things to your body, and by making it a huge part of your diet, those effects will show much more.

The Atkins diet has already caused a lot of serieus discussion about the health risks associated with meat.

Very true. I've read many an Atkin's bashing article in health and fitness mags. In the same articles, they always state how you should focus on the types of carbs instead, as Tova said. They also state how you should focus on a plant-based diet. That sounds much more reasonable to me!

You all should feel lucky you just have to hear about it. I'm a vegan but i'm 14 so I live with my parents. My Dad is on the Atkins diet so I hear about it soooo much. I'm very worried about his cholestral and all. Basically all he eats is bacon(eehh) and steak and blue cheese and occasionally spincah and broccoli. So I hear about it 24/7 but then my parents end up hearing about the vegan diet and animal rights alot too but anyway.....

I have SO many friends and acquaintances who are trying or attempting to try the Atkins diet. It drives me crazy! A few years ago it was all about eating low-fat, but now it's all the (bunless) burgers and cheese you want. Fad diets make me insane in general, because I can't believe people don't realize that they are ... well, fads. And it never makes sense to eat in an unbalanced way.

It's really weird to listen to someone tell you about the vegetables they must avoid because they have "too many carbs." Who ever heard of avoiding vegetables for health purposes??

Two other things that make me nuts about Atkins: first, the people on it whine and complain about how "deprived" they are of breads, pastas, rice, etc. I agree that it's a silly (and unhealthy) deprivation, but back in my major-omni days I practically lived off meat and cheese, occasionally using some bread or pasta just to hold it together. I think the Atkins diet sounds really easy, from a junk-food point of view. If I were still an omni, it would be really easy for me, anyway. (Stupid, but easy.)

Second, I lost some weight when I became vegan -- not intentionally, but I did. Also, my friend lost some weight when she became vegetarian (this never happened to me). So our acquaintances comment on this weight loss, so admiring and envious. I can't resist saying, "Well why don't you try eating vegan for a few weeks?" NOT that I think weight loss is a good reason to be vegan, but these are people that will try any crazy old thing, and it's tempting to tease them a bit and see if they will try veg*nism ... but NO!! Giving up bread and pasta is an endurable "torture," apparently, but they won't even consider trying to live without meat and cheese for a short period ... not even to achieve the holy grail of dropping 5 pounds.

Diet-obsession is so unhealthy in the first place. Personally I subscribe to the theory that obsessing about pounds, calories, fat, etc. only slows the metabolism!

Oh, and a lot of these people who "can't" consider veg*nism love my vegan cooking ... so why do they still think it would be "too hard"??

But I guess I felt the same way once upon a time....

People will tell you about the studies that people on Atkins have a lowering of cholesterol. Well, that always happens when a person loses weight. There have yet to be studies of people on an Atkins maintenence diet (is there one, for people who don't want to lose any more?) maintaining that lowered cholesterol long-term.

Either way, I doubt those atkins people's cholesterol is getting into the low-100's like many vegans have.

I also agree, like with fats, it's the kind of carb not carbs in general. We'd all be better off eating only whole grains with all the extra fiber, minerals and other nutrients.

On "My Yahoo" page I always get these blasted atkins diet ads at the top .... I'm sick of seeing them. Why can't yahoo give me ads there's even a small chance I will click. Their advertising budget is wasted on me.

If I have to read "Feel saxy naked" one more time from an ad for atkins, I'm gonna puke

Yeah, I hear about this diet all the time too and I am sick of it. My dad, my fiance, my future mother in law, as well as all their next door neihbors are all on it. I can hardly stand it anymore. And I will not say anymore here because I'll go on to a 3 page rant most likely.

You guys want to hear something really bad?

Well, you know I'm veggie born, right?

My mom (one of my best friends) was a vegetarian my whole life. She recently got married. Her and her new husband went on the Atkins diet.

I didn't realise so many of you knew Atkins freaks. This is looking bad!

Wow Cedar, how amazing to be veggie born!! I cringe to think I've spent 16 years eating dead animals - a lot of that time I even proclaimed myself as an avid animal lover! I've been veggie for almost 6 months now -- when it gets to a year I'm sooo throwing a veggie / vegan feast!!

That's so awful about your Mom though If there's one thing I can't understand, it's being veggie / vegan then suddenly not doing it anymore. Nothing's changed, the animals are still living in their own ****e and being slaughtered hung upside down, so why do it in the first place if you're going to drop it afterwards? I've heard that over 1 million veggies have returned to the Dark Side. Ugh.

Everyone I know who was on the Atkins diet (most of them on it for at least 6 months, if not longer than a year) are now probably about 30 pounds heavier than they were before they decided to go on it.

Of course, they lost weight on the diet. But as soon as they went off the diet, they ballooned.

And yes, every time i see them, they remark, "you're getting so thin!! what are you eating?!" and I just say that I'm vegetarian and then they ask what I eat and I tell them. They usually say, "you're soooo good for avoiding bad food!" as if they couldn't do it themselves. They just don't want to.

(I've lost 55 pounds being vegetarian; 2 years this november. have never felt better in my life - and yes, the initial reason I went veg was to lose weight.)

Well done Amy!! Good for you.

Surely, as we all know the dangers of the Atkins diet, there are warnings somewhere against it?! I mean, it's all gonna end in tears for a lot of people unless someone does something...

Urm... it's useful to note that the most people who think that they are on the Atkins diet, arn't.

The Atkins diet is a multi-phased process, of which only the first stage really involves cutting out the carbohydrates. It's actually quite a subtle piece of dietry engineering.

Like all diet's, the aim is to get you to eat less food. If you examine the saitity (how full they make you feel) of each type of food, in proption to the calorific value, carbohydrates are well down the list. So, as an initial step, reducing the carbohydrate intake, until the stomach shrinks a little, is a good plan. Then, you phase in fibre and the complex carb's, and phase out the fat and excess protein. From the horses mouth:

http://atkins.com/howto/index.html

All the people who just don't eat carbohydrates are not following the atkins diet. They are following the latest fad in food. And they are stupid.

The next time someone claims that they are on the Atkins diet, ask them what phase they are on. My straw poll suggests that 70% of the people who claim to be on the atkins diet didn't even know that there were different phases to it.

I just wish that it wasn't being pushed as the be all and end all of dieting - it's not the most effective diet - it's just the easiet if your a carnivore, and don't want to make an effort.

People are generally completely out of touch with their own bodies and health.

They eat crap, don't exercise and are so surprised their bodies look bad.

Than they do whatever it takes to look good (not feel good!). Dangerous pills, stupid diets, operations. It's so sad.

Wow Cedar, that is unbeleiveable.

Amy, that is awsome. Hopefully you will be an inspiration to other people who are thinking of going veg.

I think alot of people who go on the Aktins diet go on it for a quick fix. They don't realize that it has to be a lifestyle change. Just like all diets, if you go off it and start eating a bunch of junk food, of course you are going to gain weight. Aktins is just the fad diet at the moment. The sooner its gone, the better. My dad went on the Aktins diet 3 years ago and has lost 150lbs. However, he realized that it has to be a lifestyle change. Now he leaves all the crap out and eats healthy things like fruit and veggies (and is not so much as an Aktins follower anymore). I'm glad he made the switch from die hard Aktins follower to healthier eater. Also he is training for a marathon so he has added exercise. Most people I know who are on the diet (and I actually heard these words out of someones mouth before) 'you shouldn't exercise because you will gain mucscle mass and therefore gain weight'. What the hell? How can they consider this healthy?

As i see it, atkins has a lot in common with anorexia nervosa. Simply because in atkins and anorexia, no energy is consumed, and thus ketosis starts. In ketosis, fat is consumed to give energy, and there is a byproduct - Ketones. Ketones are what cause stinky breath. I'm no biologist, but I know that having a big ass load of ketones in the body is not good.

Anorexics often consume empty foods to fill their stomach. This can include ice water, and even tissues. The same goes with atkins, except that the empty food in question is protein. We need about 50g of protein a day. What the body doesn't use, it wastes. Protein is broken down into amino acids, which aren't water soluble. This means more work for the kidneys. hence, atkins probably isn't good for your renal system.

I'm against any kind of fad dieting. I am one of those people who cares little about health or weight. If lard was vegetarian, I'd eat it. (Well, i actually wouldn't, seeing as solid fats disgust me.) Anyhow, I believe that people should eat whatt he hell they want to, and atkins means that some great foods are out. Falafel, quinoa, beer, fruit, pasta, bread, sugar and noodles are all out. These happen to be my favourite foods. And this is supposed to be the diet where you can eat "The foods you want to eat"?? Fad dieting is simply self deprivation because your goals are jaded. If someone views reducing the amount of pressure they exert on the floor as being more important than enjoying a good pita full o' falafel, they are crazy, in my opinion. It's the same with any other fad diet. Unless you're so fat that your health is at risk, I see dieting as unnecessary. Accept your weight, and enjoy good food regardless of the fat/carb content.

I would stand by my view that atkins is akin to anorexia nervosa. It is very similar. People in today's society are obsessed with how much they weigh. My view is that everyone should stop worrying and enjoy their life. I don't care if someone is fat, thin, or whatever.

A girl who I work with started atkins. She's on the diet and I seem to know more about it than she does. Anyway, she had the atkins book on her desk, and I told her that it's an unhealthy diet. She said "whatever" Later, a few people walked past her desk, saw the book and said "Oh, you're on atkins?? You should only do it short term, because of the health risks." so I guess people are very clued up on it. She eats a lot of sugar free stuff, (i.e. Sugar is replaced with aspartame, which is a foul tasting, headache-inducing sweetner.) and a lot of eggs.

Atkins has come under a lot of criticism. It deserves it all, and if not, more. Atkins is a diet designed for weightloss. it works because you are technically starving yourself. The only difference is that you starve yourself whilst you fill your belly. I see weightloss diets as superficial anyway, so I'm against atkins. Also, atkins can possibly bugger up your renal system, and it's bad enough having fad-dieters whinge at you eating high fat foods. Now they'll whinge when you eat a slice of bread.

On atkins, you will not get a few vitamins. Notably ascorbic acid, which is found in fruit & veg. You'll probably have to supplement this. Vitamin Y is out as well. (No falafel or fruit) You're cutting out energy. You need energy. You need a lot of it.

Ok, that's the end of this rant. Now it's time to extend my middle finger at every fad-dieter on the planet, and tell them not to be so superficial. Yup, if you want Loki as a boyfriend, then don't diet, don't get a facelift and don't get breast implants. If you do, I'll reject you immediately for being superficial. (I would never date someone on atkins or another fad diet.)

Thanks. I hope so, but ... well my DH (who also lost 30 pounds), my brother, his g/f and me - we all went veg (my brother went vegan; we were all vegan for a while but my DH and me now eat soy cheese).

My mom's side of the family ALL tried Atkins & failed miserably. Now they ask us for health info on cooking different veggies, about trans-fats, about cholesterol, etc etc... it's kind of nice, but on the other hand, I know that most of them are too lazy to follow through. So it's rather disappointing as well.

My MIL is the same way - she said that she's been eating more vegetarian food - until I realized that what she meant was that instead of eating meat, she's now eating cheese. I kid you not, she actually cuts off hunks of cheese and eats it. And thinks it's healthy because it's "vegetarian"!!

I think what I hate more than the Atkins diet itself is ignorance about nutrition. It pisses me off that we, as a society, do nearly NOTHING to educate people about health. So people read about fad diets and because the makers of the fad diets want to make $$, they make the diets sound as scientifically plausible and as healthy as possible. And people buy it while ignoring their own common sense that eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains while getting moderate exercise is the best way for prolonged weight loss.
