Mother's father and mother became vegetarian (rather unusual for the time - being white people in Australia) and raised my mother vegetarian. I was raised vegetarian but have been vegan for last seven years.

It's so ingrained in me without any chance of backsliding that I wonder if it's how I was raised or if theres some genetic or epigenetic aspect to it.

Unless theres Indian people around, I'd presume most on the board are the first generation veg*an in their family?

Is there any indication it runs in your family?

Three generations!

My maternal grandfather and grandmother were Seventh Day Adventists. They were vegetarian, and raised my mother and her five siblings vegetarian. My mother lapsed but returned to it for the last third of her life.

I'm not Seventh Day Adventist, but came to vegetarianism from the angle of yoga and meditation when I was a teenager. I've been vegetarian for forty-five years and vegan for the last few.

Interesting, yes - love how SDAers here in Australia, via Sanitarium brand, have so may veg*an products on supermarket shelves.

I'm the first, but one of my cousins and the daughter of another cousin are also vegetarian. I think we all did it for our own reasons, as opposed to being raised that way- but our reasons are different: my cousin did it for health, while I did it because of my feelings for animals (although I certainly make healthy choices for my own sake, too!)

My brother and I are the first in my family. Brother went vegetarian about a year or two before I did, I’ve been vegetarian for over three years and vegan for a little under one. 😁 I’ve always wished I was raised to be vegetarian, though. I’d like to raise my (future) children that way.

For easier socialisation, if I had kids, I might let them be vegan in the home but vegetarian outside so they could have like birthday cake at other people's places etc.

I'm fine with defending my choices but it's hard to expect a kid to start explaining that they cant eat that piece of chocolate because of the veal industry etc.

Growing up vegetarian was a bit weird socially - being vegan would've taken it to a whole other level!

I can see that. I think that's likely what we may do too.
