I was just wondering how everyone pronounces vegan. I say veegan.

I pronounce it vay-gin<br><br><br><br>
but apparently I'm in the minority as most people say vee-gin<br><br><br><br>
dictionary.com shows it as either way

I say vee-gan. I heard someone (who was unfamiliar with the concept) say vay-gan, and I <i>thought</i> that was wrong. I see that it's open to interpretation.

I think it has a little to do with the part of the country/world you grew up in. Or your relatives...like my dad's side of the family are southern so I have a very slight southern accent. So when I say it, it almost sounds like vay but not really vee.

It's definitely vee-gan. Just READ the word!!! It's so obviously not vay-gan. Vay-gan?! I mean, come on!<br><br><br><br>
(Just kidding, calling it vay-gan isn't really that bad, though vee-gan is correct. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">)

I say vee-gun. I looked it up, and that's technically right. Plus, I have sort of a northern michigan accent. Lots of hard "E"s

I say Veee-gun. I used to say veg-an (soft G) before someone corrected me.<br><br><br><br>
The people who say Vay-gun really irritate me. I don't know why--it's such a ridiculously stupid thing to get irritated about. It's not like I'm more informed than them.

Didn't the term vegan originate as a shortened version of vegetarian (ie veg*****an)? To indicate the extra commitment and removal of other foods.<br><br><br><br>
So technically at the point of its creation it should be pronounced vedge-un or vedge-an.<br><br><br><br>
Personally, I say vee-gun, but (with my enunciation) it sounds so close to vee-gan that I probably say both.

"I don't see any vaygetarians either. "<br><br>
========================<br><br><br><br>
the e is altered because the g in vegetarian is a j sound (while in vegan it's a 'g' sound). Try saying 'veg-etarian' (without a j sound for the g .... you'll see it's the same sound as in vegan ;-)<br><br><br><br><br><br>
a better word would be "beg" (as in "beg for money" ) ... if someone said "beeg" I wouldn't know what they meant ;-) . It's the same exact sound as in "vegan" .<br><br><br><br><br><br>
Anyway , English is vague (or is that veegue LOL) , so whatever
