How do you feel about zoos?

Sorry if this is in the wrong area but wasn't quite sure.

I'd just like to know what everyone's opinions are on going to zoos, wildlife centres, animal parks etc and aquariums.

I personally have enjoyed going to them for the most part, but then sometimes wonder how and why the animals are there. If they were wild animals that were injured or abandoned when they were young and were unable to go back to the wild I'd feel a lot better about going. Even if that were the case, I'd like to actually know it.
I also think they are good in the way that they educate people to animals and their environments and often there are displays to show what we can do to help.
A select few animals I know they are trying to save from extinction.

I just don't know though whether I agree with some of their enclosure sizes though

I personally like zoos, wildlife parks, ranges etc. They CAN be great for both people and animals when done well, it's just unfortunate that so many zoo's aren't up to standard. I have been to some amazing zoo's, such as the Singapore Zoo where many of the animals weren't even in cages at all. The orang-utan section was amazing, they all just swung about in the trees above our heads with no fences. Many of the other areas didn't have fences either. And the areas that were fences off were very spacious and nice.

I think zoo's can be a great place for humans to learn and gain respect for animals and many of the animals are treated amazingly well. Unfortunately that isn't the case everywhere, and there are some zoo's out there, especially in poorer countries where the conditions just make me want to cry. And I think in some places in the US you can have private zoo's which is the biggest joke I've ever heard. That should be outlawed. All in all I think zoo's are okay as long as they are monitored well and kept up to a high standard of living for the animals.

Part of the institutionalization of the entire Earth by ****ing humans. It's all that will be left for many Animals, and most stupid humans think that's good enough, before the Animal is extinct. Come watch me too, and I'll give you the lead supplement you're lacking.
I'm mixed on this... On the one hand I love animals, think they're beautiful, and always love seeing them. Most of the animals in a zoo I would never be able to see if they weren't there and it's amazing to be able to. On the other hand... cages and being stared at, which I know I wouldn't like very much. The last zoo I went to wasn't too bad. A lot of the animals weren't in cages, and even the ones who were had a lot of space.

So I enjoy it but also get saddened by it at the same time. I don't think I would ever refuse an opportunity to go to one, but that happens very rarely. Except for maybe once or twice in my life, all my trips were school trips.
I don't care for zoos. While I think it's nice for children,I am very sure it's not so nice for the animals.I don't feel animals should be kept in cages and so-called natural pens especially if they are healthy and capable of taking care of themselves in the wild.On the other hand if they are not capable and it would cause them to die if released than I feel it's fine. But that is the only exception I would make.

I love zoos! I think they're a lot better than they used to be and a lot of them concentrate on animal conservation and they make sure the animals are in suitable habitats. They are great educational tools for people. I fully support zoos that treat their animals well and educate the public about animal conservation.

Jersey zoo is exactly that!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Seriously! Animals kept in slavery in confined spaces with thousands of people coming to see them every day is lovable? And it is completely useless! How would you feel if that was done to you?

The animal conservation bit is just a facade. Let's be honest here zoos exist for one reason and one reason only, to make money. What exactly do they do for conservation? The only good things I've heard could easily be done without imprisoning animals. And there isn't a whole heck of a lot of "education" going on at zoos. I've been to many zoos, some of which are regarded as the best in the country, and I never learned a darn thing. Actually, I think zoos do the exact opposite. People see animals in zoos and think conservation isn't important because we'll always have animals in zoos, even though that's completely false and absurd.

Plus I think it's just sick and counterintuitive to take healthy, reproductive animals out of the wild. Many species are threatened largely because zoos, circuses and aquariums took them out of their habitat in the name of "conservation". How's that for irony?

And was it really necessary to boo me? I give my opinion, and people are free to counter with their opinions. But booing someone is utterly rude.

At times we express our opinions with enthusiasm let's not be too sensitive about it. Sorry if I offended you although I strongly oppose what you suggest. And I have offered my view and posed a question.
