Im new to vegetarianism, and am moving towards being a vegan, but it's been hard for me to change without gaining weight because I feel like carbs are the only thing I crave that I can actually eat. HELP, I want to LOSE and not GAIN and Im getting a little hefty!

Carbs don't make you fat. Excess calories cause weight gain, whether those calories come from fat, protein, or carbs. Your body needs all of these.

Make choice like taking unsaturated fats instead of saturated, and choose complex carbs over refined (whole grain is better than enriched and refined)

Tinydancer's reply is good.

I want to add that weight loss is a poorly understood subject, and it seems the variation between different people is enormous. For me, eating carbs helps me lose weight; fat is my nemesis.

There's a lot of complex chemistry involving fats, carbohydrates, insulin, and stuff. And then there is also the psychology of what makes a person feel "full", which is really anyone's guess right now.

If carbs make you put on weight, that's probably just a fact of life for you - and so you will need to find veg protein foods that you like and can conveniently put to work in your diet.

You might also want to look more carefully at what you eat - sometimes carbs aren't the really culprit, it's the fat we add to them. People seldom feel they need to add fat to protein foods, but pasta is doused in oil, tortillas are topped with cheese, and potatoes get their butter and sour cream.

Thanks, yah that is a great point, we add bad stuff to the carbs we eat.

It's just that previous diets I have used included eating low carbs, so now Im worried that It will be hard to still do that. At least since I will be eating more veggies and fruit, I can healthily cut back on breads and pasta, because I will still get carbohydrates.

I always eat a ton of carbs, bread, rice, pasta. I've lost 53 pounds and am still going strong. Those are the staples of all my meals, I just try to get organic, and usually whole wheat stuff.

Like the posters above said, carbs don't necessarily make people fat.

True, cause I eat soooo much carbs each day & nothings happened. I'm basically addicted to carbs and it's just silly when ppl blame on it for causing weight gain.. well it might depend on your body etc cause everyone's different. For me, i couldn't live w/o carbs - when i eat too little of it i just end up with a bad mood & irritability lol
