i may actually get to go to Mongolia. kinda sorta soon. met a guy today who has been planning a trip for the past year - he's got everything planned out, pretty much ready to go...within the next two years. perfect! i'll be done with school and if he decides to go sooner i could go during a summer. maybe, of course. there's an actual, decent chance that this might all pull through. the guy knows his ****! the language barrier will of course be an issue, but if (and that's an IF all around) we don't go for another year or so, maybe i can try to find someone to help me out there in the language respect. i'm sure i'll be getting together with him and seeing what's up. he invited me to - i'll go! only problem is he's not a big guy but i can kick ass myself if it comes to that. safety is my only real concern.

ohh. exciting!

it's Mongolian, go figure. i didn't know they had their own language. this site seems to have a lot of info, plus basic mongolian phrases

http://www.mongoliatoday.com/

the food thing could definitely be an issue...we would be backpacking across the area...not sure if he is concentrating on upper or lower, yet. either way, the language varies - we'd be in very primitive areas where there would still be quite a few different clans, and i do know that there is a huge meshing of dialect. it would probably be fruitless for me to try to learn..but i've been in china before with people who spoke no english and i spoke no dialect of chinese and we got by.

i think i'm getting a little too excited too soon, heh. IF this carries through, i might be willling to resort to yak/goat milk at the most, IF protein became a problem for me. we would no doubt carry most of our food though given the backpacking.

exactly - of course i wouldnt be overly happy about the dairy, but it's definitely not the same as 'here.'

thanks, seadolphin - like i said, not sure if it's a go yet, but it's a definite possibilty and i'm excited just about that. i've had a thing for mongolia since i was 15, so this would be awsome. i spent a month in the crowded areas of china, and would love to see this area. ah...very cool!

southern mongolia is pretty damn populated unfortunately, building up into the Gobi, but go further norhtn and it's pretty, very! isoloated. i hope this works! i would maybe feel comfortable with another person, just in case, however.

it's very likely that he would actually - he has yet to go to Asia and i know he would like too - i'll definitely be inquiring within about it. he could be our bodyguard. gotta see if other dude would mind though - don't think he would but three people is a good amount, no more and it would be too touristy groupy, heh.

mmm..mongolia. now i really need to go to class and daydream about mongolia (among other things).

Funk,

That sounds so awesome! Would you fly there, do your hiking, and then fly back?

I agree that the milk goats are much more likely to be treated better than here. Heck, some peasants let their 'barn animals' sleep in their beds with them (and not in a kinky way). The cleanliness standards might be an issue though. I've never had to do grocery shopping in another country, but I'd expect that not every place has enforced sanitation laws.

majake/beck - sort of...he is one of 'dude's' friends and apparently he had told him about me (that i wanted to go to mongolia, etc) and the guy needed someone to go with so hey..there you go. but yeah, we'll be getting together to see how feasible everything is.

skylark - you got it - fly, backpack, fly back. it would probably be a couple month long thing - i'd like to spend some more time in a couple cities i was in before, and definietly spend some more time on the Wall.
