Let's say that you found some chickens in need of care. You have a nice home for them, free range, and everything, but they are able to lay eggs.

What would you do with those eggs as a vegan? Since it's against our principles to eat them, what would you do with them? They will eventually pile up after awhile. I mean, I guess if you want to leave them there, okay, some hens will eat their own eggs, so maybe that's an option.

The hen may want to keep her egg, but what is she going to do with it? Do you have the right to take it away from her so you could sell it to help with her cost of living? Is that fair? I guess if you did, you could also advocate to your buyers to buy from free range, local, and organic farms that treat their chickens well, instead of buying from factory farms.

Or if there aren't any buyers, would you be willing to be vegetarian so you can put the eggs to use instead of letting them rot, if the chickens aren't eating their own?

Just a question. I'm sure people will have different opinions on it.

i'd feed them to the chickens. if there were too many eggs for the chickens to eat i'd give the rest away to my friends or neighbours who would otherwise buy eggs from the store. i would never sell them

Exactly what Zirpkatze said. I'd give them back to the chickens as I hear that they are good for them (although it is a bit gross sounding). Any left I'd give to friends/family so that they don't buy eggs from a shop.

Seems like many want to feed them to the chickens :p Cool. I dunno, I think I'd be okay with selling the eggs, making sure their money went to their upkeeping, especially if I'm tight on money myself and don't have a lot to dish out for them. If they want to the hens want to eat them too, by all means...let them eat eggs!

Hmmm, interesting, yeah...some other wild animals are looking for food. And if your chickens are already doing great with your food, why not share with the less fortunate?

Yup, me too. They're bred to lay way more eggs than their bodies can handle and they need the nutrients back.

If you have a garden, you can mix them in with the compost to grow food for yourself and the chickens.

I'm pretty sure I would either feed them back to the chickens, if they would eat them, or I would give them away to friends/family or feed them to my bf who is not a veg*n, nor does he plan to become one in the future. I would rather use something if I knew where it came from than buy a so called "free range" egg from the store. I wouldn't feel right selling them for a profit, even if it went back to the chickens' care.

It wouldn't really be profit if the money all went back to the chickens xD

And how are the chickens going to spend their money?

It might be against yours but it isn't against mine. I'd feed some to the hens and, if I wanted to, be happy to eat them myself. If not my partner (not a vegan) would eat them. I wouldn't be vegan but I've thought about this before and I don't have a problem with it, I can't see how eating the surpluss eggs of an adopted chicken effects the animals in a negative way.

I wouldn't want to sell them though. If I potentially had a LOT of hens and had a big surpluss of eggs I'd give them to people, maybe somehow give them to poor people who would otherwise by economy eggs? Or maybe just friends and family. I'm not sure.

You would still be making money off of the chickens, and I feel that making money off of an animal is sort of against the basis of veganism? I know everyone has a different view of things, but i still wouldn't feel comfortable selling the eggs. I would happily give them to people or my bf could use them in his cooking.

Ummm, the money would go back to their food? LOL? Unless you want to grow their food, which is up to you.

@ Avid I might be making money off the chickens but I wouldn't be making "profit" off of them. I was just saying how people that don't really have too much money to splurge on the upkeeping of them might want to sell the eggs so they have money to spend on them. If you wouldn't feel comfortable with it, that's fine, there is nothing wrong with giving them away too if you can afford to.

@Pirate Ferret

You wouldn't be "getting" chickens. That implies buying from hatcheries, which many of us know is a no no, as they most likely destroy the male hens that hatch since there isn't much market for them. I'm talking more about "adopting." If you see some chickens at animal shelters (yes I have seen some) why not try and take care of them if you can afford to, granted that may mean having to sell their eggs to support their food, water, and electricity in their shelter.

Wow I didnt realise I had to watch my language so much. I was talking about adopting. To me, you can "get" an animal through several methods including adopting. Jeeez.

Let me rephrase then - If you can only afford to adopt a chicken by selling its eggs, then its a bad idea to adopt the chickens. I'm not comfortable with the idea of making an animal 'earn its keep', adopted or not.

Do what you like, its your decision and you shouldnt have to rationalise it to us. If you feel comfortable with it, do it.

People on here always get on me about how I use my language, not necessarily you, I have nothing against you personally, but it's good to see that others don't like it when the tables are turned. So it's good to watch your language like a shark, because people here at least jump on you over the slightest thing. Or maybe they just all have something against me :/ Sorry for doing that to you though, I figured you probably meant adopting. But I'm just use to everyone here wanting me to "CLARIFY" myself.

I'm not saying anyone's way to go about it is wrong or right, I'm simply stating my own way I'd probably go about it. I think everyone offered very insightful ideas.

Option 1: cook them and give them back to the hens.
Option 2: trade them for fresh vegetables/herbs/something else you'd like.
Option 3: give them away.
