I went to the store to get a vegetarian DHA supplement (I have been going to drugstores, health food stores, supplement stores, grocery stores, looking for the algae based DHA but all of them had gelatin capsules and, knowing that a vegetarian capsule DOES exist, made me unable to buy them......)

Well, I called Whole Foods and they told me, "yes, we DO! We just started stocking them two weeks ago, come on it!" They had exactly the one I wanted, the "Health from the Sea" 100% vegetarian omega-3 DHA. (This formula is not vegan, as it has beeswax.... but it is the one my doctor recommended...)

I was SHOCKED when I saw the price - $27 for 30 pills!!!!! Of course I'll spend anything to have a healthy little baby, but that's a lot of money just for pills, that's more than my pre-natals cost. I had seen them online for just a little less so I guess I can't complain..... I've seen them on some vitamin sites for a little cheaper, but I'm afraid to order things online from companies I don't know, ESPECIALLY ones that sell pills....

Does anyone order it from a reputable company they could recommend me? Thanks!! :)

Before anyone goes ripping on me, the following is relavent to the question being asked.

Yes, there is another alternative that is algae based DHA. It comes in small glass tube with a dropper so you can adjust the dose for varying needs.

It is extremely fresh and refrigerated from the time it is made.

Here is a link and it is around the same price. It is completely 100% vegan and again, I like it because there are no capsules and I like the taste of it.

Here is the link.

https://www.drfuhrman.com/shop/DHA.aspx

I do consider Dr. Fuhrman's stuff a reputable company, he strives for the best ingredients and healthiest way in every case.

furman's stuff is actually a decent price. a 60 day supply for $30 isn't bad--$.50 per day.

my husband's CLO costs about the same amount and lasts about the same amount of time. So, we'd be spending that much anyway. And, i love that it's not in a capsule. woohoo!

thanks for the link!

but, i also learned that there is DHA in eggs--so i'm trying to figure out the amounts to determine if i even need to consume this supplement. it would be most excellent if i don't have to!

still, thanks for the link.

If you want to know for sure if you need DHA/EPA supplements you could always get a "Essential Fatty Acid Profile" Blood Analysis done. It will tell you.

Here is another good link on Fatty Acids.

https://www.drfuhrman.com/library/article11.aspx

Some may already know thi sbut for those who don't..

Did you know that almost half of our eyes and brain are made of fat? And that fat is mostly DHA.

I think Jain people are strong evidence that you can convert ALA to DHA - because they never eat eggs or fish and they are just fine.

Zoebird, I used to get some DHA from eggs, but they recommend a minimum of 250mg (some say 300) a day to pregnant women, and I can't eat an egg or two a day.... they are grossing me out BIG time!!!! I've only choked down 2 since getting pregnant. So I needed a supplement.

I like the supplement i am taking a lot. It also has flax oil in it, so I get some ALA in it. I get 500mg of DHA a pill too. yea

yes, one can definately convert ALA to DHA, but the question regarding it is who can and how much can they?

i'm not sure how much DHA is in eggs to begin with--and unnless you're getting enriched ones it's probably not enough. . .because the dosages are high. . .and it is really important.

i am not giong to take prenatal vitamins--i really dont' believe in vitamins personally. i mean, i 'believe' in them as i know that they exist, etc, and i also know that there are times when supplementation is necessary for a quick, healing boost of nutrients, but i don't believe in taking them perpetually--instead, i believe in finding food sources.

but, i don't mind supplementing with natural oils and such--like olive or hemp oil or the DHA algae supplement that's not in a pill form. just one of my quirks you could say.

i gave you a link to the Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year in another post, but might as well give it again. it has lots of great herbal information for teas and tinctures to help with various aspects of pregnancy, birth, and lactation. definately worth a look!

but then, i'm 'out there.' I'm going to UC and i'm thinking about doing UP as well (unassisted pregnancy--no outside prenatal care)--or just the minimum of care based on what i want specificly (palpating for placental placement for example).
