Hi, I'm Kara, a 36 year old f in CA. I have not eaten meat in 5 days, which I am proud of, but I am having some problems. Is it normal in the beginning to have some stomach problems? I don't really know what I am doing yet, but I have felt pretty crappy for the last couple of days. Will this work itself out? Thanks!!

Hi Kara, and welcome to VB!

I'm not sure if stomach problems are common or not when switching to vegetarianism, but I'm sure more members will come on to let you know. I never experienced them personally, but maybe some people do.

Hi Kara. Welcome to VB and congrats on going veggie. I never suffered any stomach pains myself I'm afraid so don't know if it's normal. I'm sure someone will be able to offer advice.

Hey Kara! Welcome to VB, I'm also a newbie. I also had some stomach problems when I stopped eating meat - I believe it was because my increase in beans & veggies (fiber!!!) but I adjusted to the new diet in a few weeks. Good luck!

Yes, when you add more fiber-rich foods to your diet, such as fresh fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains, you're going to notice a difference. As you continue to eat such whole foods and omit meats and processed foods from your diet, your body will gradually adjust to your new diet.

Congrats on making the switch and good luck with your new diet! If you have any questions at all, don't be afraid to ask. There is also a New to Vegetarianism forum here with lots of good information about maintaining a meatless diet (especially the Tip of the Day Thread) that I recommend reading. Maybe your stomach is adopting in the food you eat right now, that won't last for long. Your stomach expel the toxins in your body right now. So I guess it would be a rocky start for you.

What a furious start!!! We're already in a discussion. But maybe you'll start a threat in the forum "General Health Discussion".

And congrats on getting rid of the meat! Feels great, doesn't it!

Thanks everyone!

The update is that my stomach problems are just about all gone, so it seems I did need to go through a few days of adjustment.

I have to say that the biggest reason this feels good is that I'm not contributing to the mistreatment, cruelty and slaughter of animals any more. That's the main reason I started this, but I am sure my health and my general well being will improve with time.

Did I interrupt a discussion? I'm sorry if I did. I am new, and just clicked the post button. I'll explore the site a little more and familiarize myself with the way things work. Sorry again!
