I'm Heidi and am a reborn vegetarian as of 3 weeks ago. Sadly I was vegetarian for a year over 13 years ago after reading Diet for a New America. Fell off wagon when pregnant with second daughter due to beef cravings (which was the easiest for me to give up) and unfortunately never got back on. My 16 yo daughter admires Hannah Snowdon, an outspoken vegan girlfriend of a lead singer of a band she loves. After watching several videos she posted my daughter became vegetarian over 3 months ago. She is heading towards vegan. She had me watch Gary Yourofsky's speech and I also watched Get Vegecated. Both of those did it for me so if dusted all my veggie cookbooks off and committed to it for life. I'm not sure I can go vegan but I have drastically cut my dairy and only buy eggs from locals who have happy hens in their back yard. I mainly signed up here for support as it is difficult being the rare vegetarian in a rural town of carnivores and living with non-vegs. My daughter constantly got weird looks and comments for the lunches she brought and I get cracks from my husband. My youngest is Omni as is my husband so that is what is especially difficult when it comes to meal prep. I still fight temptations. Anyway, look forward to meeting others dealing with similar situations.

Hello Lavendyr! Welcome to veggie boards. I know it must be very hard be a veggie in a small town, it's even hard in some cities! You made the right decision on going veggie though :D

I'm in a similar situation, although in a big city instead of a small town. My wife is very omni... it was a big deal the other night when she ate a dinner with no meat in it. My two kids are omni, although they eat vegetarian when I cook for them. My 7 year old daughter shows interest in eating more vegetarian and often takes rice and beans and a piece of fruit to school for lunch and she says all the other kids thinks she eats weird... but she seems to take pride in that.

Anyway, welcome to VB!

Yes my husband is *very* carni-omni! He is very southern and as a cop he eats tons of awful fast food. I want to try to beg or bribe him into watching Gary Yourofsky's speech. At the very least he will give me and my 16 yo more respect vs. remarks such as how an animal didn't die in vain when he ate all his meal. I don't see him ever going veg but would love for him to make at least informed decisions. A glimmer of hope came when on his own he reposted a pic and article about the demise of male baby chicks. He told me never again on grocery store eggs. It's small but a start! LOL Yeah whenever my daughter was making her lunch she and I would chuckle about what ridiculous thing someone would say to her at lunch. She took a portabello mushroom burger once and you would think she was eating something from another planet!
