Firstly, I just want to say how great it is to be apart of this community, and how awesome I feel after the recent decision that I have made.

My story: I grew up in the typical American household where meat was an essential part of a diet. Not just any meat, but much of the processed stuff, such as chicken nuggets, hot dogs, bacons, and all that junk. And I hate to say, but I had little to no veggies, fruits, grains, or anything on my plate. Even worse, I would help myself to huge portions of this stuff (Sometimes as much as two burgers, a steak, and a plate of fries)!

Nobody told me about nutrition, calories, or portion size, and I assumed that the way we ate was the way everybody ate. I can't remember the exact moment in time, but around 15, I began to take a good look at my diet, and questioned my eating habits. I've been curious about many things, and love to do further research and learning about them, but food hasn't been something to come across as an interest. So upon my findings, i've learned more in-depth where my processed food comes from, how it's made, how it affects your body and even the sometimes cruel nature behind it.

But at the same time, I was learning about the health-promoting benefits of several fruits and veggies, most of which I have no memory of even trying (These include apples, peaches, melons, and all the other common stuff, i'm afraid). Growing up, I've heard that you should eat your fruits and vegetables, but again, no one ever told me why, and the idea of "super foods" was so foreign to me. But nonetheless, I think I started off with a cup of mixed fruit (Strawberries, and sliced kiwi), and I was simply blown away by the taste, the sweetness, and was wondering how I could have missed out on this my entire life.

This led my trying to trying other fruits, and veggies, including cantaloupe, steamed brocolli, blackberries, spinach, mustard greens, plums, pomegranates, apple pears, papaya, pineapple, beets, celery, and the list goes on! As I tried these for the first time, I began to slowly replace the processed junk that I was eating, including soda (Since learning about green tea, and even water). I transitioned from processed meats to only red meat to chicken and salmon. I even found out about whole grains, including brown rice and whole grain pasta, and actually preferred their taste and texture over their white counterparts. Soda was gone, as was dairy.

All these changes lasted for another couple years, and because I felt a better, noticable change in the way I felt, thought, and lived life, there was little to no urges to fight. But then I thought to myself, "What if I can go the extra mile, and cut out meat completely"? I always try to push myself to go the extra mile, but this meant giving up something I was raised on, and if I would be alright without it. After doing some more research, I gained the knowledge and confidence to finally have my last chicken and salmon meal.

I've made it 45 days, and I don't miss meat one bit. I feel wonderful, and again, i'm just so happy that I was able to make these changes before something bad might have happened, and i've learned so much.

A little bit more about myself: I am male, 18, soon to be 19. I'm getting ready for college, and preparing myself for the real world! I also love to play the piano (since about age 5), enjoy drawing, photography, and love video games.

I apologize if this is a little long for an intro, but it's really the first time i've gotten a chance to write about my changes. But like I said, I could be any happier to be a part of this community, and am looking forward to a great time here!
