Hi,

I found this site searching the internet for ideas for vegan party food!

Since I was about 12 I was a pescetarian for various reasons including not really liking meat, being really against factory farming, environmental reasons, the whole BSE thing and other health issues.

My partner of now about 5 years was vegan before we met, then vegetarian and started eating fish after we'd been together for a while.

Recently he decided to be properly vegetarian so I decided to do the same which got me thinking more about animals which has led me to try veganism.

So I've been entirely vegan for a 1.5 weeks and am finding it fun! It's nice to eat without guilt which I did still feel eating milk and eggs. I'm lucky in that there is a vegan co-operative supermarket not too far away where we can do our weekly shop. That has been a huge help and it's great not to have to carefully check labels all the time! There's also a veggie shop/cafe 5mins from my work where I can buy vegan lunches if I don't have time to prepare anything so it's not been too difficult so far. I'm dreading eating out as a vegan though!

Sorry this has been such a long post!

eating vegetarian at restaurants is easy enough, but you're right that eating vegan is sometimes impossible when dining out. I travel a lot for work, which means staying in hotels and eating out for six nights in a row. I used to get pretty frustrated trying to keep vegan while away from home until my very wise (and vegan) girlfriend pointed out that most decent places will make substitutions to their dishes upon request (i.e. marinara instead of cream sauce, or grilled veggies instead of chicken.) I've even had them make me stuff that wasn't even remotely on the menu before. as long as you're diplomatic in asking, friendly, and tip accordingly, everyone wins. you get exactly what you feel like eating, and they get a happy customer.

welcome to veggieboards, by the way!
