woo-ee! the concert was SO great. i highly recommend seeing this show, if it comes to your town.

we unfortunately got to the venue too late to get into the animal costume (childcare issues - babysitter was an hour late), but we had sixth row seats and a tremendous view. the flaming lips' show is UNBELIEVABLE! they really put on a spectacle, with giant balloons, confetti, surreal videos playing on a huge screen backdrop, fake blood and nun puppets. this is to say nothing of their music, which i happen to believe is probably some of the most innovative and amazing stuff of our time. they are incredibly talented. geniuses, all.

beck was incredible too; his last album was pretty mellow so i was sort of expecting the show to be real quiet, but the energy behind it all (even the mellow tunes) was glaringly obvious. he and the lips' have a great onstage dynamic together.

the only complaint i have was about the CROWD. never a more lethargic bunch of do-nothings have i encountered at a concert. wayne coyne (lead singer of the lips) worked really hard at getting us all excited, and it worked while he was doing it, but the moment he relaxed, everyone kind of went back to just standing there like lumps. i guess maybe they were all stoned on LSD or mushrooms or something and were too busy tripping out on the lights and sounds to make noise of their own. heh.

so, after the show we went around to the lobby that's outside the backstage area and a co-ordinator type person asked us to wait and he'd collect us when beck and the lips were settled. we sat around for a bit and then he came back and took us back stage where wayne was waiting. he shook our hands and asked us our names and was really friendly. we walked into the beck's dressing room which was lavishly laid with food and drink and royal blue curtains and flowers and wayne chit chatted with him a bit while we kind of stood there, stunned and looking dopey. we were told beck was having a "family meeting" so we had to leave his dressing room, but it was cool to see him just chilling. he's actually a very wee little man, maybe 5'5" and thin as a rail.

wayne then led us (by this time it was just me and my husband) down to the lips' dressing area and we stood around and shot the **** for about half an hour, talking about their movie and the show and he was SUPER friendly and very sincere. i don't know what i was expecting but i was really grateful that he took the time and made an effort to just chat with us like we were all friends. we laughed a bunch and he let my husband take a couple of pics of me with him (don't know how well they'll turn out because we ended up buying a cheesy disposible camera on the way there; i'll post them if they're any good, when we develop them). we also got to say hello to steven drozd, but michael ivins was no where to be seen.

anyway they were actually just packing up immediately to get on their bus and drive down to their show in portland today, so it wasn't like a big, sit-around-and-party-with-the-lips thing, but it was GREAT nonetheless. i'll never forget it.

also: wayne coyne is FREAKING HOT. very sexy, debonair man.

i'm attaching a picture of my backstage pass.

Kreeli, babe, I am so happy for you guys! I'm so glad you got to go! I've always wanted to do the backstage thing. I feel like it would be kinda awkward, tho. I haven't met too many celebrity types, and I tend to get awe-struck...

I've seen both Beck and the Lips live, and I would do anything short of eating meat to see them at the same show! How'd you score the backstage passes?
