Hello everyone,

I've decided to become a vegetarian mainly because I watched the "Meet the Meat" video. I heard it was gruesome but not to that extent....and now I am sickened by the thought that I ate murdered beings killed by inhumane people. But I've been a meet eater all my life and I'm 16 years old and have never really ate salads or heathy foods in my life I like fruits however though...so can anyone give me any advice to someone who wants to become a vegetarian but has never eaten that many "greens" before?

Thanks

hi! Welcome to VB and congratulations on going vegetarian!

My first advice is to learn to like vegetables! Especially the green ones! I am being very hypocritical, I don't really like them and should eat more. But I try to get them in on occasion.

Maybe if you posted the kinds of things you ate as a meat eater we could help you adjust your diet to a veggie one? There are so many veggie things to cook/buy/eat, I'm having difficulty giving concise advice!

My advice to people who say they don't like vegetables is to try it cooked a few different ways before you decide for sure! Sometimes a way a vegetable is cooked makes all the difference in the way it tastes. Overcooked veggies are VERY gross, and a lot of people grew up with being forced to eat them that way and that is their disturbing view of a vegetable!

I don't eat many salads myself and I've been vegetarian for 12 yrs. Other people at them all the time! Go to a library or bookstore and browse some cookbooks to get some ideas, or even read through some of our recipe section! If you're not used to eating a lot of fresh produce, I think you'll find that going vegetarian is going to open up a whole new world of food for you, instead of closing one off. Good luck!

Get a couple of good cookbooks. I like the PETA one and the Moosewood series. Pick out some things you like and give it a shot. As you get more comfortable with new ingredients, you can branch out on your own.

Even my previously meat loving husband doesn't miss it, he even said the other night "veggie food is more interesting".

ETA: Your public library probably has a decent selection of veggie cookbooks, so you might want to start there.

Hey there. Try some rice dishes, such as currys and chilis... do them without the meat, use quorn or something else instead of the meat... i'm not very helpful i know.. i'm no cook! One day i'll get my dad to teach me how to cook!
