Hi Everyone,
Recently my 6 1/2 year old daughter has decided to be vegetarian and I am also looking at joining her. She is also quite a picky eater. Basically I was at a loss at what to feed her before this and I'm finding it even harder now. Most of the vegetarian meals I know how to cook or have the reciepes for tend to be more for the mature palette. Can anyone help me with some kid-friendly vegetarian meals?

Hi and welcome to VB!
I became a vegetarian when I was 7, though no one else joined me (well, my sister tried for one day
), so it's awesome that you want to be vegetarian with her as well! I was also a very picky eater back then, but looking back, I think I actually started fussing less when I became a vegetarian. Maybe she'll be like me and make it easier for you.

Here are some sites you could check out for ideas:

http://kidshealth.org/kid/recipes/ve...n_recipes.html

What kinds of foods do you know she likes, and what kinds does she not like? Are there any foods that she doesn't like in certain forms, but maybe pureed, chopped, etc., she does? You could also 'hide' foods in other foods that she would probably like, like black bean brownies, avocado fudge, vegetable-fruit juice, etc.

There are cookbooks aimed for the parents of vegetarian/vegan kids and even cookbooks to help veg kids cook themselves. Here are a few of those cookbooks:

Kids Can Cook: Vegetarian Recipes by Dorothy R. Bates
Better Than Peanut Butter & Jelly: Quick Vegetarian Meals Your Kids Will Love! by Marty Mattare
Pretend Soup and Other Real Recipes: A Cookbook for Preschoolers and Up by Mollie Katzen
Salad People and More Real Recipes: A New Cookbook for Preschoolers and Up by Mollie Katzen
Vegan Lunch Box by Jennifer McCann

I just hammered my own kids (raised veggie from birth, mind) that, as vegetarians, we are not 'allowed' to dislike any type of vegetable whatsoever.

Worth a try with small amounts of different foods untill your daughters picky-palette adjusts itself?

Wow, I just want to say- you're an awesome parent. I went veg at around six or seven as well, and had very little support (and plenty of condemnation). I'm glad the attitudes in the world are changing in a good way.

I'm sure Elaine's recommendations are excellent. One of the best parts of becoming vegetarian (aside from the health and conscience elements) is learning about new foods and experiencing a whole new world of culinary variety.

I'm raising a vegan child. To give veg parents resources, tips and support I created the website: www.RaisingVegKids.com. On the site there are a lot of kids books and cookbook recommendations. One of my favorites that you should get is vegan lunchbox by Jennifer Mcann. Good luck, and glad you are supporting your child in making a compassionate, just choice.
