Although confining and selling live lobsters is always cruel, Raley'sa California-based supermarket chain with more than 135 storeshas really gone overboard when it comes to abusing these animals. The chain is now putting each lobsterwhile still alivein a plastic container (like Tupperware) that is barely larger than the lobster's body. The lobsters don't get any water to live in, and they receive no food at all until they are sold or die (according to one Raley's store manager, lobsters in the containers usually die in a matter of days).

Thank you for speaking out for those who cannot.

I sent an email. I noticed that the first paragraph of the email was worded a little incorrectly, so I made a slight change in a couple of spots. Here's what I sent, as corrected:

Quote:

I also sent an email after I recieved the notice from Peta. I had no idea Raley's sold live lobsters in containers and it's unfortunate too because my local one has a really good natural foods section. I'll have to find somewhere else to take my business until they stop.

Ive never heard of this before, but being a claustrophobic type myself, it almost gave me and anxiety attack thinking about it. Ive always loved lobsters. Even long before I was a vegetarian, Id never eat lobsters because I knew a lot of people boiled them alive. That in itself is disgusting enough but this..this brings it to a whole new level. I wrote a long email to the store.

Your message has been sent. If you'd like to take things one step further, give Raley's a call at 916-373-3333 and tell them that selling live lobsters in tiny plastic containers is cruel and twisted.

Raley's had previously been selling live lobsters in small plastic containers in its stores, but today, after hearing from an overwhelming number of concerned consumers, Raley's spokesperson contacted PETA to say ...

"Raley's Family of Fine Stores offered live Maine lobsters to our customers for three days during the holiday season. Raley's will not repeat this promotion or offer live lobsters in any of its stores."
With this decision, Raley's joins the ranks of other compassionate grocery chains including Whole Foods and Safeway who have stopped selling live lobsters altogether. Like all animals, lobsters feel pain and can suffer. In nature, they form relationships with other animals and can live to be 100 years old. Thank you to all of you wonderful people who e-mailed and called Raley's to voice your concerns. Because of you, countless lobsters will be saved from being confined and sold, not to mention being boiled alive.

Lobsters may even feel more pain than we would in similar situations. One popular food magazine recently suggested cutting live lobsters in half before tossing them on the grill (a recipe that’s “not for the squeamish,” the magazine warned), and more than one chef has been known to slice and dice lobsters before cooking them. But, says invertebrate zoologist Jaren G. Horsley, “The lobster does not have an autonomic nervous system that puts it into a state of shock when it is harmed. It probably feels itself being cut. ... I think the lobster is in a great deal of pain from being cut open ... [and] feels all the pain until its nervous system is destroyed” during cooking.

Don’t heat up the water just yet, though. Anyone who has ever boiled a lobster alive can attest to the fact that when dropped into scalding water, lobsters whip their bodies wildly and scrape the sides of the pot in a desperate attempt to escape. In the journal Science, researcher Gordon Gunter described this method of killing lobsters as “unnecessary torture.”

^^ And that's one of the reasons why I absolutely despise when people belittle marine animals. (I don't know the proper term for the family/genus/species/whatever of lobsters and such animals that most people don't think are important.)
