I write a food blog, and I thought that I would devote the month of November to alternative Thanksgiving dishes. I want to include things like dairy free, gluten free, and vegan alternatives to traditional Thanksgiving meals. So far I have a dairy free/vegan green bean casserole (<a href="http://foodandword.blogspot.com/2011/11/dairy-free-green-bean-casserole.html" target="_blank">located here</a>). Stuffing seems pretty easy to make veg, but what are some others? Can it be made gluten free? I know some people use marshmallows with yams, but marshmallows aren't strictly vegetarian. Could vegan marshmallows substitute? I've never used them, but I hear they exist.<br><br>
Also, any suggestions for main dishes to replace the turkey that don't involve tofurkey?<br><br>
Boy, I feel like I am asking a lot of questions here... But this board has been such an awesome resource for me in the past. Everyone here is so knowledgeable and helpful! Thanks in advance for any advice!!

One thanksgiving, we made an awesome vegan shepards pie. Even my mother in law (the carnivore: she eats meat and ranch dressing with just about every meal) had two helpings. I can't for the life of me remember where I found the recipe and I'll need to find another as we are doing Shepards pie again I think this year. I found this recipe for shepards pie. I'm on the hunt myself for holiday vegan food recipes. My family will be out of town for Thanksgiving, allowing my husband and I to have a completely vegan Thanksgiving without the "Why won't you try some Turkey? You're vegetarian right? You can eat poultry."

I've never tried using them on sweet potatoes, but have heard they melt well. We usually make a streusel topping. It's very tasty and easy.<br><br>
1/3 c brown sugar<br>
1/2 tsp cinnamon<br>
1/2 c finely chopped pecans<br>
2 TBS flour<br>
2 TBS veg marg<br>
1/2 c coconut (optional)<br><br>
You just mix the ingredients with a fork till crumbly and sprinkle over your sweet potatoes and bake as usual.<br><br>
I've also heard that Smucker's marshmallow topping in a jar is vegan and was thinking about swirling it through the sweet potatoes since it's a lot cheaper than the vegan marshmallows.<br><br>
I have a friend who says she's going to use a gluten free cornbread mix to make a southern style cornbread dressing this year.<br><br>

A veggie pot pie would be delicious. I just use store bought pie crusts and make a gravy using vegan "chick'n broth" and add sauteed celery, onion, a little sage and chopped veggies and use chickpeas in place of chicken. I add a little soy milk to the gravy to make it extra creamy and always make more than the recipe calls for because I like my pot pie nice and "gravy ish".<br><br>

I think I will have to make that streusel topping myself. A group of friends and I get together every Sunday for potluck dinner, so I get to try out all sorts of things on them, hee hee hee. I definitely have to investigate the Smucker's marshmallow topping as well. If that's true, it will make me very happy!

i usually bring a veggie pot pie with potatoes, peas, beans, carrots, celery, mushroom gravy and a thick rustic crust on top.<br><br>

soups are also great and can be gluten free easily, like pumpkin or butternut squash soup, or split pea, or potato leek etc.

A really good source is glutenfreegoddess.com. She's got a lot of really good recipes, not only for Thanksgiving, but for year round.
