someone scold me and persuade me not to smoke. i never have before and my group of friends has been straightedge. but, this new guy ive been hanging out with does them a lot. i want to be able to be friends with him and not worry about doing them, and it's not a matter of peer pressure. i don't mind standing alone. it's just, i'm such a stressful person and lately my attitude has been " i'm a teenager, i need to live it up, who cares if they're bad ect ect ect". common sense tells me no but the teen stupidity tells me YES. so all of you kick my butt and tell me noo.

Almost EVERY smoker began smoking exactly like this. I know I did.<br><br><br><br>
Nicotine is prehaps the most addictive drug in the world. You won't be able to stop once you are hooked, and it takes very few ciggarettes to get hooked. 1 in every 2 smokers will die from a smoking related disease.<br><br><br><br>
You don't need this.<br><br><br><br>
Try reading Alan Carr's "Easyway to stop smoking" - read it right now before you've got addicted, and I bet you'll NEVER start. You'll probablly save yourself around £50,000 too (which is how much you could end up spending on ciggarettes if you smoked for the rest of your life)

Quitting smoking was the hardest physical challenge I have ever had. It took literally months to get over the withdrawals, I drove everyone I love crazy, and I put on 15 pounds. Don't start, because quitting is awful!!!

Think of how you could otherwise spend the money. Oh, and no offense to the smokers here, but I have smokers at work, and when they have their jackets on, they stink. And sometimes just their hands if even a couple feet away from me, stink. I can smell a trail of stink in the air after they walk in from smoking. And they can't smell it. Not just because they are used to it, but also because it reduces your sense of taste and smell.

You probably feel more pressure from your friends than they intend to put on you. If someone is really pressuring you to smoke, then as soon as you start they'll just expect you to change in some other way.<br><br><br><br>
Don't allow yourself to be manipulated.<br><br><br><br>
I noticed in your profile that you aspire to be a lifeguard. Smoking, even a little, affects your breathing enough to affect your strength and stamina in the water. I know this firsthand.

I understand that you are feeling stressed at this time in your life, but think of the stress you are going to feel if you let cigarettes grab hold of you. Why would you want to give them control over you, knowing how hard it is to quit? It will be a lot worse 10-20 years from now when you are past this period in your life and you decide you want to quit. Even if you manage to avoid cancer or emphysema, it's a habit that is becoming increasingly unpopular and difficult to maintain, what with all of the no smoking areas popping up. Stay strong, be smart, don't start. Yes, you are teenager and you should enjoy this time in your life. Smoking will not help you do that. What you do now most likely will have some effect on you later on. Good Luck! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/images/smilies/smiley.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title=":)">

I smoked for 20 years. I quit when I got pregnant. I thank God every day for having been able to quit and not look back. It's a very strong addiction.<br><br><br><br>
I would advise you not to smoke, not just for health reasons but also, as stated above, because you will save a TREMENDOUS amount of money by not smoking ! You could put what you would spend on cigarettes in a savings account and see how fast it grows ! That would be a nice incentive !<br><br><br><br>
Instead of smoking, I would advise you to join a sports club and start doing something physical to get rid of stress. Preferably something outdoors (it will make you appreciate your lungs more), but any sport should do it (except maybe for bowling or darts, where people smoke while competing... LOL). Running, athletics, tennis, swimming, diving, anything that would make you feel less stressed and put you in a group that would - hopefully - be attracted by other passtimes and challenges than poisoning themselves (because that's what it amounts to, in the end).<br><br><br><br>
Find yourself some constructive challenges and incentives. If necessary, find yourself some new friends. You can do it !

Not only is smoking bad for you, but it makes you smell awful. It ruins your teeth, it gets on your clothes, and it makes you do crazy things like go outside in the pouring rain when it's cold just so you can smoke.

Cigarettes are more addictive than just about any other illicit substance. They smell awful, aside from the lung/heart internal effects... they also make your breath stink, as well as the rest of you, turn your teeth yellow, make you more succeptable to gum diseases, they make your skin wrinkle prematurely... think beyond this one guy.. who is going to want to date you when you smell awful, your teeth are all yellow (and tongue sometimes), and your skin is all wrinkley? Second hand smoke is terrible for you too, so ditch the lewzer and find some clean friends.

thanks everyone! it all really helped. i mean, i've always resisted pressure to drink a lot or get high. but smoking doesn't SEEM as damaging even though we've been learning about it's dangers since 6th grade. maybe i don't make sense. who knows. but i do know that hearing all your personal experiences is helping me to stay strong. im actually off to the YMCA to exercise off some stress! yay!<br><br><br><br>
[nigel..good point, i didn't even consider it's effect on lifeguarding! priorities, priorities]

Someone I love dearly was a smoker. They quit over ten years ago, but it was too late. Ten years ago, they were too weak to go to the grocery store. And with each passing year, they have gotten a little worse. At one point, the person had to be put on steroids and got all puffy and bloated looking. At another point, they got diarrhea so bad that they couldn't eat much of anything, this was a side affect of the disease & or the medicines that they were to take. It lasted over a year. They described it this way, "If I eat anything, I just poop my brains out."<br><br><br><br>
Now, the person weighs about 90 pounds and can't speak on the phone for more than 5 minutes, because it tires them out so. Yet, they are still alive and could stay alive for a few more years! Emphysema is often a very slow death.<br><br><br><br>
This person is now 73 years old.<br><br><br><br>

Best thing to do is never start.<br><br>
I quit smoking years ago, 8 years I think and I STILL crave them.<br><br>
Smokeing though ages you faster and not in a pretty way, leads to gum disease, makes your teeth ugly and your breath stinky not to mention all of you stinky.<br><br>
Raises risk of heart attack and stroke as well as various other health issues.

Oh please don't start smoking. I regret the day I did, and it's such a hard habit/addiction to give up. I get terrible anxiety and insomnia and depression when I try.<br><br><br><br>
No good comes out of smoking - it's not cool, it's not sexy. It's stinks, it's expensive, it's terrible for your health, and it's a ******* to quit.
