I was in a vegan restaraunt in Cali (a first for me) and I ordered this fabulous mushroom mock calamari. Seriously, it was tiny slices of heaven.

I need some help recreating this in my little town with no veggie restaraunts. I've googled it and vegweb-ed it and can't find anything. Maybe you all can help...

It was little slices of musrooms that had a crust to them kinda fried kinda pan seared maybe? I haven't had calamari in years and probably only twice in my whole life but it had that seafood taste that I guess would come from seaweed or some spice that I can't think of the name right now. The were just perfect and delicious.

Any ideas? TIA

You mean like calamari fritti? I only tried a single bite of that once and decided it felt like battered, fried worms. My biases aside, I'd imagine the batter would be similar to what you'd use on onion rings.

I punched vegan onion rings recipe into google and got this as my first search result, as well as a few more similar ones. I'd try that and adjust the seasoning to include something seaweedy and possibly other things you might find in an actual calamari recipe.
