Okay, so I'm trying to cut out dairy and eggs totally after about a month of weaning off of them, and I'm good on everything... except breakfast. I normally have a bowl of mueslix for breakfast, but I think it's gross without milk, and therefore the milk with the cereal has been the only dairy product I haven't gotten off of. SO! I know there are milk substitutes out there, like soy and rice milk, but I don't know which one to go with. With all the weirdness around soy milk, I'd rather not go that route (lots of people I know have had adverse stomach reactions to soy milk as well, and I don't have a very tough stomach...). I drink skim milk, as I don't like how thick other milks are. What substitute should I go with?

rice milk is not "thick" and is my milk of choice for cereal. I drink "Rice Dream" which is yummy It's quite sweet and a lot of my (veg*n & nonveg*n) friends don't like it but it is the only "milk" I can drink straight & unflavoured.

the only thing I don't like about Rice Dream is that it isn't fortified with most of the stuff soymilk is. But that isn't really a problem, I'm just paranoid.

Why dont you try one carton each time you buy a new one or something? see what one you like. its all down to personal taste i think.

personally i hate soy milk it leaves a powdery feeling in my mouth, and rice milk is too sweet. never tried any others, but then again i never liked real milk. guess i can live without milk hehe

You can buy soy milk for almost as cheap as cow's milk now, but that doesn't help me. I can't stand the taste of soy milk in large doses, and only use it to flavour my porridge and use in my coffee.

1 Litre can last me two weeks.

I wouldn't say soy milk is thick at all either, I used fully skimmed milk since I was about 9 or 10 because my mum did, and I found soy milk to be around the same, maybe a bit thinner.

Just experiment, I tried soy, rice and almond milk before settling with soy. If you're only going to be using it in cereal or coffee it doesn't actually taste that much different from skimmed dairy in my opinion.

Ew, soymilk is disgusting. I used to drink it when I was new to veganism but now I go for rice milk (which doesn't SOG up my cerial the way soymilk did) or almond milk when I take a trip to the health store. The absolute best is almost milk of course, its got a great smooth flavor, its light, and the chocolate almond milk is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!

I love soymilk!

My advice: go to the market. Buy 2 or 3 brands, or 2 or 3 flavors of the same brand. Go home, pour a small glass of each. Drink one glass, then the other(s). This way, you'll be comparing them to each other, and not comparing them to the milk you're used to drinking, and you're more likely to find one you like. See what I mean? Concentrate on finding one that tastes good, not one that tastes just like milk.

And don't give up on soy milk just because some people are intolerant. Can you eat tofu, soy beans, or soy-based "meats?" If you, soy milk should not be a problem.

I don't like soymilk as much as I LOVE almond milk and rice milk. I really got hooked on the vanilla Rice Dream.

Almond milk is the best!

I especially love the chocolate flavor.

My favorites are Rice Dream (plain) and Vanilla Silk soy milk. Another thing to consider is that as you stop eating animal products and start eating plant-based food, your taste buds tend to change. So some of the "milks" you don't like right now may taste really good to you sometime down the road.

I like Silk Vanilla and Very Vanilla soymilk. I don't drink a lot of it, and I've never tried almond or rice milk, though, so I may not be that viable of a source.

The stomach reactions are typically caused from an ingredient called carrageenan (sp?). Once they change to a carrageenan-free brand, the problems usually clear up.

That said, I'm throwing another vote for chocolate Almond Breeze. That stuff rocks the casbah for sure!

My favorite milk substitute is chocolate Silk. And I always preferred skim milk when I wasn't vegan, and I didn't find Silk thick. I'm not much for the plain, at least not alone, but if you're using it with cereal I think it's pretty good. I agree with the other posters' ideas of trying different kinds. Just because someone else likes something doesn't mean you will. Experiment around and see what you like best. Good luck!

Soy milk is thick, and, as it has been said on here (though it's been to long for me to say from personal taste), soy milk is more comparative to whole/2% milk while rice is like skim milk. Soy milk is the cheapest milk alternative to buy, the eisiest to find, and (putting mythes aside) the healthiest. If you don't like the thickness, try out soy milk powder (where you can decide how thick you want it to be) or mix part soy milk and part water to taste.

Rice is much thinner. It took me longer to get to enjoy rice, but then again, I never liked skim milk, so maybe that's why (read above). Rice seemed a little chalky to me at first, but not any more. Whenever I get tired of soy I switch to rice. One of the downfalls of rice milk is that it is more expensive. Also, chocolate rice milk dosn't taste all that great, in my opinion.

Oat milk is another alternative, it is more expensive then rice milk and thicker then soy. You can only buy this is the nonrefrigerated containers. It probally wouldn't be hard to make your own, by blending oats and water untill smooth, and you could add more water to make it thinner and more like skim, though I have never tried to make my own before.

I havn't had almond milk very much, mostly because it's the most expensive of them all. However, it is eisier to come across then oat milk. Almond milk, from what I remember, is very thin and (I think) healthier then rice milk.

I sugest that you try them all out, and use them interchangeably (though of cource you'll have one that you use the most). You may find that some types of milk are best in certian recipes and some are best to eat with your breakfast... and don't give up just because you don't like them just yet. You may love them, or they may make you want to throw up. However, after being vegan for a while, you'll probally find that your taste buds have changed and that you are willing to eat/drink things you wern't willing to eat/drink before.

Best wishes!

My vote goes for Almond Milk. I'd die without that stuff.

Well I would die without... oh, wate. I havn't died from not drinking cows milk yet...

Just joking with you. I've just heard way to many times "I would die without *name random animal product*" to many times to count.

I should probaly go to sleep now. I think I'm loosing it. Why do I always post stuff on veggie boards either: (a) at 1 am in the morning when I'm coocoo or (b) when I'm at school and the bell for my next class is about to ring, so I only have a few more seconds to finish up and hit the "submit reply" button?

Okay, off topic. Carry on...
