most that do taste cheesey have casein in them and therefore aren't vegan.

there's one new one you can buy online that everyone's raging about, i don't remember the brand name or url, anyone??

but i do love my vegan grated parmesan for sprinkling on pasta, i think the brand name is soymage, and i think they're one of the only few brands you can buy in stores that are actually vegan.

i dunno, i tried veganrella and a couple others and thought they were nasty, so i gave up and learned to live without cheese, but am tempted to try the mac'n'cheeze recipe posted in the food forum

I don't like Toffutti slices - they're all hydrogenated fat. I think it's Soymage that makes an ok vegan cheese slice ( it's marked vegan). I try and stick with the mozzerella -flavored ones, the yellow/orange ones scare me. They don't really taste like cheese though. Joanne Stepaniak's book, The Uncheese Cookbook has a recepie for every type of cheese imaginable, check it out if you can.

The Uncheese Cookbook is definitely a worthy purchase.

I also use the Soymage parmesan and am happy with it. I don't like the Soymage cheese slices much.

I use Tofutti cheese slices quite often. I'm pretty impressed with the taste. I don't care too much about how healthy or unhealthy they are.

I personally think the soymage parmesan is awful, but, to each his own. The soymage slices are tolerable with a lot of condiments, and they're calcium fortified, which is nice.

The only good vegan "cheese" that I think tastes pretty decent is the Tofutti Better than Cream Cheese. Good on bagels, obviously.. But the herbs and chives flavor actually makes a good sandwich spread, too. A long long time ago I used to get turkey sandwiches with herbed cream cheese at this deli... Sort of the same thing I suppose.

Thanks guys, just so you know I'm ovo-lacto veggie. I'm trying to get some ideas for my dad...he recently had bipass surgery and is now on a strict low fat, low colesterol, low sodium diet. So I'm trying to find some recipes and ideas for my mom. He has always been a big meat and potatoes guy...he liked what he liked and would't try anything else. Well, now he has to try new things because he can't eat what he was eating before. To bad it had to take somting like this to change things, esspecially since we've been bugging him for years

Anyway, any good mozzerella substitues like that you could make pizza with? Thanks for all the other suggestions!

I know what you mean. My mother just got out of the hospital. They thought it was heart disease, but the tests came back okay. They did put emphasis on her weight and diet. She eats horribly and I've been bugging her about it for years. Her whole family is overweight and eat terrible foods. They all think being a vegan is just ridiculous. This last scare has convinced her though to atleast try cooking veg a few times a week. She actually asked for recipes.

I'm happy that your father is doing okay.

Thanks Erin and I'm glad your mom is OK too.

What gets me is that after people get really sick or have a heart problems...olny then are they told that eating to much meat, or eggs, or cheese is bad for you. Otherwise all you hear from the meat or dairy associations is how damn good it is for you grrrr...I just hope he's not going to be to stubborn. thanks...

Vegan Gourmet is absolutely delicious. It's the only vegan cheese I've ever found that is even remotely acceptable. The nacho cheese flavor is great with Mexican dishes and the mozzarella is actually white, not bluish-purple like so many other brands.

The great thing about Vegan Gourmet is that it melts very well. I've used it to make enchiladas, quesadillas, and lasagna and each dish turned out wonderfully. Here's their URL

www.imearthkind.com

That looks great. If I can get it in my area, I really can go vegan earlier than later! ^___^

yeah that's the site i was thinking of that everyone seems to love. haven't tried their stuff yet myself

since you're not vegan you could just pick up any soy cheese but some are gross. one we tried on pizza once was grey and rubbery with zero taste, i wish i could remember the brand name so i'd know to avoid it in the future. it's kind of a trial and error thing. the Yves slices are ok, i don't know if they make block or shredded type though. there is one brand in my local grocery store that makes it preshredded for stuff like pizza, it looks decent

Man, Vegan Gourmet sounds good! It's expensive though! It's like the same amount for shipping as it is for the product! Next time I'm in CA though...hah.

YES!!!!!! I'm going to California in May...can't wait to finally try Vegan Gourmet!!!

Last year, they sold Vegan Gourmet in my relative area. It was literally the only place outside of California, besides like two others, that sold it, which was a COMPLETE MIRACLE. Pennsylvania has NOTHING..but they had that!!! So eventually I got my butt down to where they sold it and they said that the peopel that shipped it to them had gone out of business and they wouldn't be getting it in anymore. GRRRR!!!! I really wanted to try the stuff!

But now..I can!

Yum, I can't find anything like this in Australia just one type of horrible rubbery soya cheese that has a few different flavours. I would love to try the parmesan.

I like Yves Veggie Slices and Shreds, but dunno how much they taste like real cheese. It's been so long since I had any real cheese. I eat the slices on crackers, or for grilled cheese. I use the shreds for pizza and tacos.

Has anyone tried Amy's Bean and Cheese style burrito? It comes frozen, it's low fat and vegan. Yummmmmmy! I don't know what is in it, as far as the cheese flavor, but it's really good and very cheese like, not soy tasting or nutritional yeast-y either. Not sure, will have to dig through the trash to find the wrapper, forgot to look last night as inhaled it.

Very good!!
