Help, eating 100% plant based. Not losing weight

7240 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  FowlWoman
So my husband and I are doing the 6week Eat to Live plan by Dr. Furman. I love it, I've been a vegetarian for a while now, but his book really helped me convince my husband to go plant based. I really need to lose around 30pounds, if not more. My husband also could use to lose some weight. 4 weeks into the program according to others who have done It I should have lost around 19 pounds at least. But I seem to have stalled at 10! My husband in the meantime is shedding pounds so easily. He is down over 20pounds. This is so frustrating to me. I am following the program very strictly. Tons of raw veggies and fruits. Tons of steamed veggies. Beans, small amounts of nuts and a small amount of grain. Granted I haven't been exercising much, but would that really cause me to just stop losing, when I clearly have a lot of extra weight? If anyone has any ideas please help. Thank you.

You are doing well. Healthy weight loss should occur at the rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/losing_weight/

If you continue to follow Dr. Fuhrman's plan properly, you will continue to lose weight at about that rate. Remember, even people who get weight-loss surgery typically require 1 year to lose 100 pounds, which works out to 2 pounds per week.

What is your current height and weight?

My current height and weight is 5ft 3in at 160pounds. I'm a muscular build so my ideal weight is between 120 and 130pounds. So I have a ways to go.
I have always understood that weight loss can come in fits and starts ... so you may not loose all the weight evenly. Also I'm not sure how old you are but if you're a woman you may have some monthly fluctuations that can affect your weight loss.

I have to say 10pounds in 4 weeks is pretty good going! It means the weight is coming off slowly and steadily - you're not putting your body under undue stress. Well done you.:)

Did you check hormones ? But losing weight is a long process you know. It needs a lot of exercise , healthy food, and of course patience.
The beans and nuts can be adding more calories than you realize.

:)
Beans and nuts have completely different calorie content.

Yes, nuts are high in calories. One cup of chopped walnuts contains 764 calories: http://www.calorieking.com/foods/calories-in-nuts-english-walnuts_f-ZmlkPTYyNTMx.html

However, beans are low/moderate in calories. One cup of boiled pinto beans contains only 245 calories: http://www.calorieking.com/foods/ca...-beans-pinto-beans-boiled_f-ZmlkPTY5OTYw.html

Dr. Fuhrman, and other plant-based nutrition advocates, recommend that people eat beans every day. https://www.drfuhrman.com/library/foodpyramid.aspx

3) Nowloss.com is a website with a bunch of workouts and weight loss info that is really, really helpful and FREE, and

:)
[TRIGGER ALERT]

Unfortunately, the Nowloss.com website contains unhealthy diet advice, such as "How to Lose 5 pounds in 2 Days" and "How Beyonce Knowles Lost 20 Pounds in 2 Weeks".

Dr. Fuhrman has stated that an average weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week should be expected: http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/weight-loss-how-many-calories-do-eat-to-livers-eat.html . Mainstream health and medical organizations say exactly the same thing: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/losing_weight/. You are much more likely to lose weight, and keep it off, if you do so slowly and steadily.

Even if you only lost an average of 1 pound per week, this would still be 50 pounds over the course of a year. And you will have stuck to dietary changes that help you to maintain a healthy weight.

Eat to Live isn't a weight loss program but a way of eating that will get you to a good weight, and keep you at a good weight.
If you started eating and excersizing for your ideal weight, and you're now more than that, you will in time get to that weight and stabilize
Of course you can modify it by selecting lower cal options or reducing things like nuts and avocados, but the real goal is in learning how to eat for optimum health

Beans and nuts are completely different, yes. And if a person is eating one cup of boiled pinto beans, they would get 245 calories. But people often add stuff to their beans (salt, fats, other non-bean stuff) and sometimes people don't measure their beans out when eating them, so it might be a cup and a half, or two cups. So the calories creep up without the person even realizing it. It happens. I was just stating that it's something to consider.
No matter how fantastically healthy the foods are that you consume, if you consume too much, the weight will not come off.
I think you're losing at a very sensible pace. And remember, when you lose weight slowly, it's more likely to stay off. Keep up the brilliant work!

I find it difficult to lose weight because I love carbs! I'm trying to banish white carbs from my diet entirely but it is difficult.

Beans are incredibly healthy and should be in everyones diet unless they'res reason to avoid them.
You can advise not to add fat the same you'd say that about any food.
If you're following a plant based diet you're weight will level off and normalize. I would not worry much about too many beans, or any vegetable. Nuts should be controlled as they are high in fat

Best workout with healthy food is needed to maintain a fit body. Gym, aerobics and dancing are the better options for exercise.
Thanks everyone! I've been increasing my water intake it has helped a lot. I try to stay away from too many nuts. Except for a salad topper or something. I hope to start a running routine next week! I'm happy about my weight loss. Though I may not be losing Pounds I've found I look thinner and my clothes are definitely loser. I think removing refined carbohydrates has really helped change the way I look at food. I feel great!

Don't worry! Women loose weight more slowly then men. Try to relax yourself , your body knows how it is better for you, it looses weight, may be not that way you expected but it's own way. When you do a new diet there is a period of loosing weight then a body can stop for a while but after that stop it continue to loose weight, don't worry this process is normal, let the body do it's job )

When I get stuck I just figure it is my body readjusting to a new norm. I find if I just let it then it sticks. Slow and steady is working for me, I have lost almost 40# since July and I am not working hard at it. Good advice here. The way I look at it also is I didn't put on the weight in a month, it isn't going to come off in a month. You sound like you are doing a great job. Awareness is half the battle. Keep up the great work.
