Hi everyone!

My name is moon and i live in chicago. My path to veganism is probably different than most and my reasons for eating vegan is also probably different than most so i hope i can find a way to fit in here.

i spent most of my life eating the average american diet. I was thin as a child, anorexic as a teenager and then spent years binge eating. Eventually i found my way to the atkins diet and lost 81 lbs in a year, then found out i was pregnant. Wasn't sure if being in ketosis was safe for the baby so i ended up going back to my old way of eating during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Then i went back on atkins again and lost 40 lbs in the first 3 mos. I started doing some research and talking to others and reading lots of books which led me to become a TOTAL carnivore. I was eating ONLY meat, butter, cheese, cream and oil for awhile. I found a whole community of people out there doing the same thing. Many only ate MEAT and no dairy. Some ate only raw meat. (probably many of you dont know this way of life exists, but trust me ..it does, i even met a man that ate only meat and dairy for 47 yrs).

Anyway..that is a really hard diet to stay on so i eventually found my way to Paleo eating which is meat, veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds and oils. So doing paleo i realized how much better i felt not having any dairy. The paleo really slowed my weight loss down because of all the fruit i was eating. Paleo pulled me out of ketosis and changed my body chemistry. BUT..i noticed i FELT better on paleo than on atkins or the Carnivore WOE. I felt like i was getting closer to the ultimate way to eat and be healthy but something wasnt working exactly. I still have alot of weight to lose and don't want it to take years. So i started reading more and doing more research. I found myself reading about the raw vegan diet and thought to myself..well gee..they eat what i am eating only no meat! (plus no cooked food obviously). Anyways..through atkins i learned to live without grains, milk, sugar, potatoes, bread, rice. Through paleo i learned to live without cheese, cream and butter. Through everything i have read i am convinced i dont NEED any of those things. Anyways..i got the idea that maybe i dont need meat either after reading some raw vegan stories. I know from my carnivore friends that cooking meat takes away much of the vitamins, nutrients and enzymes of the meat. Raw meat has every single vitamin, mineral etc that you need to survive for a lifetime, but honestly i dont want to eat raw meat. I was close to it for awhile i was eating it as rare as i possibly could in order to not cook out the necessary vitamins i needed. The problem i finally came across was that if i eat fruit and nuts then i need to lower my fat. Atkins was a HIGH fat diet and paleo was a moderate fat diet. Atkins tells you to eat fatty meat and paleo tells you to eat lean meat.

The fact is..meat is high in calories. By being in ketosis and super low carb you can eat as much fat as you want and lose weight. (my hubby lost 120 lbs on atkins) But when you add carbs into your diet even in the form of fruit, you cant eat as much fat as you want to anymore. So to make a long story short..i stopped eating meat because its too high in calories and fat for me to lose the weight i want to ..and i WANT to eat fruit. I went a whole year without fruit the first time on atkins and then 3 mos without fruit the second time on atkins and i really missed it..not to mention i started to realize that fruit is really good for you and a healthy thing to eat!

This is my current diet: veggies, fruit, nut, seeds, olive oil, flaxseed oil and soymilk. (when i quit meat i added in 2 cups of soymilk a day i buy the enriched kind that adds omega 3 and B12 and a bunch of other vitamins. I am basically on the soymilk to make sure i get my B12 and my protein..i suppose there are other ways but for now thats all i know..i dont want to have to take vitamin supplements and i love soymilk.

A side note: my youngest son has an intolerance to gluten and casein so he is on a grain free/ dairy free diet anyway. My husband eats paleo now that he is maintaining his 120 lb loss and has become an avid bicyclist. My oldest son has schizo affective disorder and his psychiatrist wants him on low carb, off of refined foods and dairy. So..basically the only food allowed in my house at this point is meat, veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds, and soymilk (which my youngest has been drinking for over a year).

So i got to where i am from a combination of medical reasons for my sons...a huge weight loss for my hubby...a lot of research...the desire to lose the rest of my weight..and most importantly the desire to be as healthy as possible and get all the unneccessary foods out of my diet!!

Hope you don't find my story too strange...but its my path! So i guess i am what is called a vegan now...lol. I really dont know the differences between vegetarians, lacto-ovo vegetarians, vegans, raw vegans etc. i am learning. If i am not a vegan than correct me..lol

I look forward to learning more and maybe having even more reasons to stay a vegan!

Peace,
