Hi veggie people!

I've been lurking here for some days and just had to sign up. This site is hopping!

So, I'm introducing myself. I'm a single mom to 3-year-old twins and a full time student. I'm from California. I've been vegetarian off and on for 9 years. Mostly "on", but fell off course twice. The first time was when I went through a phase of thinking it was okay for me to eat fish, since I could kill a fish myself. I have come to believe that unnecessary killing is cruel, whether I could do it myself or not, so I no longer eat fish. The second time I fell of course was when I was pregnant with my twins and craving meat. I worried that it would be too hard for me to ensure that my girls were getting adequate nutrition unless I ate meat (something I now believe to be false - millions of women have healthy vegetarian pregnancies), and ate all kinds of meat during my pregnancy and for the first few months of nursing after giving birth. I then snapped out of it and cut out meat all together. I'm now raising my girls vegetarian, and they're perfectly healthy and well-fed. People who say small kids need to eat meat are lying (or misinformed).

I was vegan for about 6 months last year but stopped that due to a health concern. I feel myself leaning back toward that again though. But it's hard. While being vegetarian has never been hard for me, being vegan was a challenge. I literally dreamed about cheese for months. I loooove cheese. But I hate the dairy industry. And the egg industry. And usually, eventually, doing what's right wins out. So I see myself moving slowly back to a vegan diet in the future. I worry about switching my kids to a vegan diet though. It's hard enough to get kids to eat, it's even harder when you cut out half their favorite foods. We'll see though.

Anyway, that's me. I'm excited to be here and look forward to checking out the forums. See you around!

If you've been lurking, you may have seen VB's Raising Vegetarian Children forum, but I wanted to plug it anyway. I think you'll find lots of good advice (and support) there about raising your children vegan.
