Hi, my name is Brittany Thiessen and I am from Winnipeg, Manitoba. I am VERY new to vegetarianism. Just last week, I watched a video online called "From Farm to Fridge" about the horrific cruelty which is taking place in slaughterhouses across the world. To say the least, I was shocked and horrified. From that point, I told myself that I could not support such an abusive and cruel industry, as a believer in peace and nonviolence. I believe that humans can live healthy lives without consuming the meat of animals. I also believe that killing animals for our consumption and satisfaction of our taste-buds is completely unnecessary, which is why I am transitioning to a vegetarian diet. Does anybody have any tips for me? Also, is there any Canadian vegetarian, such as meatless chicken and veggie burgers? Thanks!

Hi,
I don't live in Canada but does you may want to check and see if your grocery store has a frozen food section with some of the mock meats. maybe gardein?
I found it easier to not use mock meats. I do most of my cooking from scratch. That's just easier for me.

Hi Brittany,

I live in Winnipeg, too! First of all, welcome and good luck!

Obviously, as we live in the same city, I have plenty of advice for you on where you can find substitutes for whatever it is you're looking to substitute. I'm not sure what part of town you live in, and where you do your shopping, so I'll just give a few suggestions.

The Safeway in Osborne village has a small section of meat substitutes which include Tofurky deli 'meats' (cheapest price of anywhere in the city!) and Yves substitutes. If you live in the village, or shop there, then both Vita Health and Organza have tonnes of fun stuff. They both have more of a variety than the Safeway, but are sometimes slightly more expensive, though not always.

The place I do the majority of my shopping is the Superstore on Sargent, they have large 'natural' section which has Tofurky, Yves, some of the products at the health stores carry, and a whole bunch of cruelty-free personal care products. I can't list everything, but it is the best place I have found to get everything all in one stop.

There are 2 small shops on Westminister (in Wolseley) that have some great stuff, but their names escape me at the moment.

For restaurants, there's Boon Burger on Sherbrook, which is awesome and entirely vegan. The Falafel Place on Corydon has incredible falafel and wide range of vegan foods, and it's really cheap and fast. There are more, of course, but these are my favourites.

Anyways, feel free to PM for any other information - I've been at this for 3 years now, I think I've found everything!
