I eat a lot of toast, probably too much.
And I often eat it with smart balance light or peanut butter, but I feel that the smart balance is pretty processed, and pb is so high calorie!

Are there any healthier or lower calorie bread spread options?

I'm on an Almond Butter kick right now. One Tablespoon only has 90 calories (same as PB), and that's plenty for a slice of bread. But for lower-calorie options: there are a lot of organic, low-sugar jams available. Mashed banana is good on whole wheat toast. And if you like something spicy, 505 organic Chili sauce is awesome, and very low calorie. www.505chili.com is the website if it's not in your store.

I love hummus on whole wheat toast, and that's low in both fat and calories, plus has important fiber, protein, and vitamins. Toast topped with hummus and tomato slices is even better.

You can also make:

Tofu pate with different flavors (sun-dried tomatoes, olives, garlic and herbs...)

Babaghanouj (eggplant pate)

Hummus (try it with different flavors as well)

Tapenade

Lentil spread

On a good crusty bread, (like a healthy homemade vegan bread) olive oil and some spices is soooo good. Pepper, crushed red pepper, and a sprinkle of red wine vinegar.... dip the bread in... yummers!

Trader Joe's has eggless egg salad, made with tofu, which is pretty good as a bread spread. You can probably try to make your own, too.
