with my first pregnancy, i got bad headaches and they have started again...from what i understand, its dues to hormones and they're supposed to lesson after the 1st trimester...they got worse in the second trimester last time and i'm approaching that time now...tylenol does NOTHING to these headaches--really laying down is the only thing that seems to help...with the first pregnancy i got a prescription that literally knocked me out, so i could only take them after work/when there was nothing else going on--and i didn't take them that often, because if there was nothing going on, i could lay down anyway...so, here i am with these awful headaches again, but its even harder this time because i have a 3 year old, so there is no time to go lay down (unless the headaches conviently come during his nap/bedtime) and i don't want to take anything that knocks me out because i need to be alert if he needs me...i'm looking for any advice/ideas to ease the pain while avoiding strong meds...

ps--also, not always, but many times it seems like they come on at the same time of day (late afternoon--not a stressful time and i usually have a snack midafternoon, so its not that)...

thanks for any help!

Have you tried one of those sticks that you rub across your forehead? I think they're drug free & they are quite effective, i find. If they continue, it might be worth asking your doctor if there's anything else he could prescribe you. Hope you're feeling better soon

Pregnancy headaches happen in the first trimester usually from the hormones and also the increased blood volume. also stress , low blood sugar, and dehydration could be causes too. are you taking in enough fluids? especially in this hot weather we are having ( at least here in the northeast )

also are you getting enough sleep?

how about caffeine? did you cut back when you found out you are pregnant? i know i get headaches when i try to cut back my caffeine intake. im a tea addict!

tylenol is pretty much the safest drug for headache you can take when pregnant, dont use advil ( nsaids) or aspirin.

where do you headaches occur? back of neck like a tension headache? you could put an ice back at the back of your neck, if its more of a sinus type headache, forehead, nose cheeks.......you could try a warm compress on your face.

i know its hard to rest with a 3 yo, my dd was 3 when i was pg with my ds.

it makes it so much different cuz with the first preg you can sleep, rest, lay down whenever you want!!

you could also try eating several meals thru the day to keep your blood sugar even, instead of 3 meals try 6 small ones.

also sometimes a warm shower helps with headaches.

hope some of this helps.
