i'm just really fed up with people thinking that if you're a guy vegetarian, you're gay. this is a place for guys who have problems like that to vent. i'm sorry if this offends anyone, but.... it just makes me MAD

What's wrong, Sweetie? Someone been rattling your cage on a regular basis? Just like anything else. You know who you are. Stand strong and ignore the peanut gallery. The only time their lables effect you is when you answer to them by reacting to them. Know yourself. Be yourself. Ignore the smartmouths and hate mongers. As long as they can see you sweat, they will push your buttons. NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU SWEAT! You know the truth! Just live it.

Hmmm, it's a double edged knife you know... most email gender jokes I get are about women being stupid, not men.

Just ignore it. Say "whatever" or something, don't get defensive, and certainly don't get offended. Laugh at their pettiness.

I'm a male vegetarian. I don't have to deal with anyone thinking less of me because I'm vegetarian, but I must admit that for the first few years of me being veggie, I didn't tell that many people, sicne it's kinda weird having a male vegetarian, especially at the age of 12.

But now that I've left high school, and it's not a "Who's more macho" competition, I'm happy telling other people, and I don't get much fuss over it. In fact, some people think it's cool that I'm vegetarian.

But for inspiration, there are plenty of male vegetarians around. Go to www.famousveggie.com and you'll find more than just women on the list.

I really do think that it's harder for guys to go vegetarian than women, especially when you're a teenager, and all the other guys are trying to be masculine, and vegetarianism is viewed as a kind of feminine thing. It's best not to make a big deal of the fact that you don't eat meat, and be a happy person. Hopefully, your friends should respect it. And also, they'll realise thatt here is more to a person than what they eat.

Well, that's my advice, but if you're still stuck, you might be able to find comfort in this website:

www.vegetarianteen.com

Although I haven't seen any articles on there which discuss guys and vegetarians, it's a good place to go. I wish I had this place six years ago when I started out, especially since I wasn't too comfortable with the social side of my dietary preferences.

Bah, humbug. Guys don't have feelings! j/k

I don't get that problem out here in L.A. so much, and I know quite a few women who dig it, though most of them have grown out of their I-need-a-man-to-make-me-feel-worthless stage.

On an even more serious note, when did compassion become such a feminine quality? And, even if it truly is more feminine, what's wrong with learning something from the fairer sex?

Our poor children have been so terribly miseducated...

The only trouble I have recalled having is if I get sick sometimes people blame it on me not eating meat. But I rarely get sick, and never take anything (most people I know run straight for the medicine cabinet).

So I've never copped the thing about males and meat (which is an association that has been in society for a long long time). I can imagine many guys have though (especially from typical macho beef-eating male members of the family).

Compassion was seen as weakness, and thus shunted over to women for a long time in Western ideology. "Feminine" characteristics were devalued. This is why I have such a problem with patriarchy, it doesn't just disadvantage women, it also disadvantages men. There aren't many options for men who want to shrug off stereotypical ideas and indulge in "more feminine" pursuits like staying at home raising the kids or vegetarianism... all power to men who do, I say!
