Just heard a snippet of a BBC report ... mentioned that one of the men who committed suicide had been held there since he was 17 years old.

Bummed me out, yeah.

[This probably should be joined to some existing thread, sorry.]

So how old was he when he died?

I think he had been there for 5 years, so he would be about 22.

Shadowlee, I agree with you. I don't understand how the U.S. can justify breaking its own constitution. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? I'm embarassed to be an american citizen.

the justification they are using ist that these people are "enemy combatants" and not entitled to constitutional protections. then they try to skirt around Geneva conventions by saying that they are terrorists and not members of a foreign army. but altogether, the thing that bugs me is that they are being held in mostly solitary confinement for years without any legal recourse at all. it is like being put in a dungeon. I believe the USA denegrates itself by treating human beings like that. we should, I think, be an example of liberty and humane treatment for the rest of the world. this prison is antithetical to the American vision in my opinion. try them and convict them or let them go.

I don't know if this is true or not, but if they really are not protected under Constitutional rights, then...

too bad. I don't agree with the treatment or length of imprisonment, either (in fact, I think it's highly unethical), but there's nothing to be done about it if they don't have the rights.

Quote:

<slightly off-topic>There's so much crap that gets passed in the U.S. that goes against the Constitution. It's sickening.</slightly off-topic>

the bush administration can't beside if they're POW's or not... i've seen clips from condoleza and another of bush's lackeys saying different things. If they are POW's then they can keep people at Guantanamo indefinately.

Wouldn't it be more fruitful and interesting to discuss what people's rights SHOULD be rather than what they are under the current arrangement?

who was it who said: rights cannot be given, they can only be taken away?

it's not that these folks don't have "rights", it's that we took them.

^^ what he said.

I'm sure a lot of people used the "well they don't have a constitutional right to vote so there's nothing to be done about it if they don't have the rights" argument during the women's suffrage movement...
