Okay, this is so nasty. I was in Kroger and I was waiting to get rung up and the lady behind me got her huge pack of meat (ribs or something) and almost right on my packs of tomatoes, I moved them. I was about to blow chunks , it was so gross. I usually try to avoid the meat section of the store anyway. Shannon/Zimma

Christa

p.s. that really is gross! I somehow usually block out the meat section of the store and don't even look at it. Every once in a while it catches my eye for some reason and it's so gross!!

Yea.. My family has a habit of like, cleaning raw meat and then reaching for something I'd like to eat, like the bag of tomatoes without washing their hands first. Not only is this unsanitary in the first place.. It's like, yo. I might like to eat those tomatoes?

I used to live in Astoria, NY, which is largely Greek. Every morning on my way to the subway I had to walk by this butchery with dead lamb hanging in the window and piles of tripe and tongue other nasties. Every once in a while the guy would come out in his bloody apron to take out the trash. Blecchhh! And the thing is, these rotting corpses in his window supposedly looked appealing to people and brought in business! In my old grocery store, they put the veggie burgers and other frozen veggies in a case right next to more hanging whole carcases!

Of course, nothing tops the time my cab driver invited me to a live goat sacrifice with his family! No thanks dude, can you just take me home?

Now I'm in Denver, fighting my way through the big game mentality. The grocery stores are pretty nice though - lots of fresh produce and even a few health stores like Whole Foods and Wild Oats.

I'll never understand how people find bloody hanging meat attractive and appetizing!

Where I used to shop all of the veggie stuff (like Morningstar Farms and Boca) was located right next to the pig brains.

Zim... why shop at Kroger when there's Ukrops? For those of you who don't know Ukrops is a really good grocery store in Virginia... Someone probably *could* put their disgusting meat next to your tomatoes there too but it's less likely to happen in a good quality store. At least I think so.

I always hesitate to use the shopping cart after watching people dumping those meat packages into it-----they are not gonna wash the shopping carts for you weirdo veggies

So I always end up holding a mountain of grocerys in my arms and go check out, got stared at a lot but oh well, who cares

Freemouse - you can put cardboard boxes into the cart and that way you don't have to get bags, either. Speaking of bags, whenever I buy produce, I don't bag things like apples or peppers, yet the store clerks always try to put them in the little plastic veggie bags for me. Why? Why? Why?

I used to work at a grocery store.

Do you put your produce directly on the conveyer belt at the checkout? If you do... DON'T EVER DO IT AGAIN! Use the bags that the produce people give you.

The flesh that is purchased by the majority of the world isn't always completely sealed.. and often the blood soaks right through the seams of the plastic.. which leaves the conveyer belt covered in blood. More often than not, the checkers don't clean the belt (It happens so often.. you'd need a bucket of bleach and a rag in your hand constantly). I always used to warn those that would come through my line of the dirtiness on the belts, but again, most others don't know about it. Just please, be aware of how gross those things are.

On the same note, can anyone reccomend a good fruit/veggie cleaner? I usually use mild dish soap, but I've heard vineager works too - I've never tried it. Any ideas?

Ukrops! Yay! We go into Richmond several times a month and I love to go to Ukrops. They have such a good selection and my daughters love the shopping carts that look like trucks. What fun!

Oh man! Right across from the health food section with all of the soy meats and stuff at Fred Meyer here is a huge sign above the meat department of a SMILING COW BBQing DIFFERENT CUTS OF MEAT!!!! It is so freaking offensive I can't even believe it.

I am so germophobic when it comes to meat in my house. I use different dishes and stuff because I'm so weird. It used to be about germs (I have OCD) but now it is about meat "residues"

Bleah...I never thought about tainted shopping carts before. I rarely go into a conventional grocery store, but I had to get some lettuce the other day and the guy in line behind me put a HUGE pack of ground beef on the conveyer. I couldn't even look at him, it disgusted me so much. I forgot why I hate grocery stores. Luckily my lettuce was from Earthbound Farms so it was packaged! A Wegman's just opened up around here and they have a huge natural foods area (about the size of our hfs) but I can't stand going past the meat department.

what ticks me off is sometimes , in the little fridge in the central healthy foods section (where the soy burgers, soy drink, frozen soy and rice deserts and other stuff are), I'll find a pack of hamburger meat some lazy jerk put there as he didn't want it anymore and it was the nearest fridge I guess.

That is so annoying and it happens every once in a while.

I can't stand seeing products people just stick on shelves around the store because they no longer want them anyway (I feel that's so lazy, like not putting carts back or doing a half-assed job of it and totally blocking the whole buggy place ) but when it's a meat product in that little fridge area I go to, it really annoys me.
