I have a couple of times, they usually seem real interested. Most of the time I expect it and don't get it. Every time I buy the buffalo wings I expect them to say "you know these aren't real meat" as if I grabbed the wrong item.

I get the healthy comment once n a while, but that's only because the cashiers are used to people my age buying stuff like Top Rameen, Frozen Foods, chips, icecream, and sodas.

... but that's only if I go to Ralphs or Vons, I've never gotten any weird comments when I go to Whole Foods.

same here, i shop at a local health food store now so they're quite used to it. but i always had a funny feeling that some of the cashiers were trying to stifle a laugh when i was at a supermarket..

I do. It's becasue I usually go with my Dad and his cart is full of his meat and donuts and mine has my organic tofu and quinoa.

It's usually "Do you need some help?" when I'm inspecting numerous boxes of chocolate cookies for a vegan sugar fix. Cashiers don't bother me though. I buy enough junk food to appear "normal."

hehe, the only comments I get from cashiers are if I know them. I had some spare money so I figured I'd do my own grocery shopping instead of making my mom buy all my food *grin*, and I went to the cashier and it was my friend Jamie and she made some silly comment about me and all my "health food junk" and how it must suck because it's so expensive (yeah tell me about it x_x), and then asked how on earth I could eat that stuff XD But I do think it probably looks pretty funny to any cashier when I'll be with my mom grocery shopping.. putting up pork chops, potato chips, snack cakes... followed by soymilk, tempeh, etc... :)

I often get weird looks from cashiers and baggers.. often their expression conveys something like "people actually eat this weirdo sh!t?" ... Never gotten any actual weird comments yet though.

I shop at Trader Joes and most of the people there are helpful and interested in what I'm buying. They have quite a variety of vegan goodies.

it happens to me, sometimes. they see i have kids, and think it's weird i'm not buying convenience/junk foods. one cashier (male) said, "that's a lot of vegetables!" then looked very pointedly at my son in the cart and said, "where's the candy?"

i raised an eyebrow at him and said, "fruit is nature's candy!"

baahaahaahaahaaha! i still laugh about the look on his face.

(i'm totally not a "fruit is nature's candy" mom.)

Nope. But here in CA I'm not much of an anomaly - I do my thing under the radar mostly. Back when I used to buy loads of tofu, I was sometimes asked "Are you a vegetarian?". My stock answer was "Where did you get THAT idea???". Just fun, no controversy.

Last week I bought some 15 pounds of oranges. The cashier girl asked "do you like oranges?" But she was cute.

When I go with my buddy and we buy loads of stuff together, they sometimes wonder how cheap all that was - they expect it to be at least twice the sum.

Yeah ... why do you think candy and chocolate bar wrappers are all bright primary colours .... it's a subconscious connection to the natural attraction to fruit

Last week I bought 4 2-litre containers of soy milk (2 regular, 1 vanilla, 1 chocolate). It was in the dairy case alongside the cow's milk. As I was piling up my cart one of the shopper's kept looking at me as if I was stocking up for a famine. Every time I put another container in my basket her eyes got wider. I just smiled sweetly at her. No one cares if you put 4 2-liter containers of cow's milk in your cart. LOL The cashier kinda looked and then got on with business.

I've had cashiers ask me if something is good out of curiosity (usually some kind of soy product), but they never look at me as if I'm weird.

i live in the pork capital of Ontario. so yes. but i usually go shopping with my boyfriend or roommate who are both omni, we normally split on the groceries so the cart is half full of wierd veg stuff and half gross omni stuff. in which case nobody seems to notice, i think they just assume one of us is lactose intolerant because of all the soymilk cause most of what i buy is just fresh produce

but when i go by myself, especially if i have extra cash to buy some of the packaged stuff, i get wierd looks. mostly from other shoppers though, not so much from the cashiers. but because of the awesome health food section i think most vegetarians in my area go to that particular store so the cashiers must be used to it.

i always seem to see the same girl in the health section, with a basket full of yummy vegan and organic goodies and i always want to introduce myself but that might be kinda wierd. she's sorta scary lookin also, like if she took it the wrong way she could probably beat me up

i sometimes get comments here but theyre usually because the cashier eats the same way i do so it's more of a "oh have you tried [whatever]?" and stuff like that. but when i go visit my mom and go shopping there its way different, she lives in a really small country kinda town where people think they can just say anything they want to any stranger they meet, but theyre usually just curious, or at least polite about it . but i have gotten some, like this classic said to me by my old boss (a veterinarian!) "veganism, thats f---ing retarded, theres no point"

Organic soy milk, tofu, ry krisp crackers, tons of produce!, hummus, tahini, dark chocolate,,, and then my brother throws in deli turkey and cheezits. : uhh dont know how the make the vomit "smiley". must look funny.

The only comments I have got is a guy saying he's veggie too, have you tried the Vegan Field Roast? Not too many funny looks.

Though, of course, on vacation, in tiny little Mascoutah, my brother goes "She's a VeG-AN.". *rolls eyes* He always announces this fact, like in some perverted omni subliminal way (that must be a record...) he's proud of me. Or, just wants to embarrass me. Whatever the reason, it bugs me! I think the person in front of us in line asked if I ate fish or something like that....

On a side, my stupid question is, location Dennys eccch

"How about Egg Beaters and toast?" egg beaters are still made from eggs!!! Jeeez! thats why they are called egggg beatters. *twitch*

I get all my veggies/fruit delivered now from a local organic farm/grocer/cafe. I also buy almost all of my flours, soy products and everything from this same place, but not on deliver.

When I used to go to the general store for everything I used to get the odd question/comment but not much.

My other half has gone from omni to vegetarian to pescatarian over the course of our relationship so the checkout chick/guy prolly just thinks we were freaks who really enjoy soy products and actually eat mostly all healthy foods.

The cashiers are usually pretty cool with what I buy. I get the strange looks from the other customers who pass me by in the store and look in my cart with a "are you sure you want to buy that stuff" when they see the tofu, hummus and veggie cream cheese. I was at the organic/vegetarian section of Kroger trying to decide if I wanted vanilla or chocolate soy milk so I was holding one in each hand. This couple passed me and I almost cracked up at the horrified look on their faces. I almost wanted to say "it could be worse - I could be at the meat counter trying to decide on which cut I want
