Hi folks, my name is Chris, I'm 44 and from the UK.

I'm just starting to take my first tentative steps into a plant based diet after being recommended 'The China Study' (an excellent read) by a friend of a friend as i've had type 2 diabetes for the last 6 years -controlled by diet and excercise.

My older brother is also type 2 diabetic and has been insulin dependant for a few years now. I don't wish to go down the same route if I can help it.

I'm sure there must be other diabetic people within these forums so has anybody any help, advice or success stories?

Regards

Chris

Welcome Chris. I think there are many people here who started their veg journeys to avoid diabetes, heart disease and the like.

How are you finding it so far? My other half and I live in Oxfordshire, and we find it super easy to be vegan around these parts. VB's a great place for advice, so be sure to ask away about recipes, products, etc. There are two subforums that you might be interested in too: The Health one (about diabetes), and The UK Forum.

Good luck. I think most people feel so much better on a veg diet.

Hi Jen and thanks for the welcome.

I know it's something that I need to do for my health so I will definitely succeed although it's still early days for me. My wife has IBS and we've read that a vegetarian diet is no good for her - too much fibre, so I may have to go it alone.

Thanks for the 2 sub forums you mentioned - I'll check them out.

Regards

Chris

Chris, if your wife is interested in veg diet, don't let the IBS hold her back. One of our moderators here is vegan and manages. She's on a sort of maternity leave now, but there might be a couple of others around too. I do think it makes it more difficult, but IBS is like that regardless.
She may not be interested in veggiedom at all, but just in case...there are options for her.

Actually, and I didn't think I'd be this blunt already as I'm a newbie myself, but I did have IBS my whole life and going vegan cured it!
I'm ecstatic about this, as I had visited specialists, tried medications, etc., with no luck.

Thinking about it though, it makes perfect sense. It takes 3 days for food to go through the human digestive system, and it's the same temperature inside as a hot summer's day. Imagine what would happen to a piece of meat if you left it outside for 3 days in the middle of summer. You get the idea. I know how excruciating it can be, so your wife can feel free to contact me if she has any questions.

Hi folks and thank you for the kind welcomes.

I will mention to my wife what has been said about IBS and let her make up her own mind whether she wants to give the diet a go with me. I've already lost a few pounds over the last week so it must be doing me some good!

Regards

Chris
